HamsterSoft has released GPL compatible source code for HFEC. See this for information about the conclusion. Short story they have complied and are no longer violating calibre's copyright.

well, you could wreck them regardless of that I think
AFAIR breaking GPL nullifies all rights to use the code. complying later doesn't heal it. You could say "bad luck guys - too late" |

The GPL says that they have 30 days to comply after being notified and everything is fine. They took more than 30 days so we can say too bad. However, we put calibre under the GPL so people can use it in derivative programs. The point isn't to be a dick but to keep the code open.
