Add another voice.

Sigil on Ubuntu Natty(P4-3.2) is way faster than Windows XP(P4-3.4).

That's good to hear. (At first, I thought by "dropping" it meant stopping Linux version altogether.) Anyway, just to be fair, it's true that it isn't difficult to build Sigil on Linux, at least on my end.

I have no plans to drop Linux support in general. I was just talking about providing a prebuilt binary package for people to install on Linux.

I only use it occasionally, but I think if there wasn't a pre-built version the number of users would drop more than you think - and you'd dissuade a number from even trying it if they had to figure out building it. Hope you keep it as you seem inclined to do, even with a slight delay in release.

No, I know exactly how may users it would drop. Every download is recorded. For 0.3.4 Linux versions had 7,459 downloads. This is versus Windows and OS X's 70,461 downloads. Not to mention the x86 Linux build (the most popular Linux build) only has 717 more downloads than the source archive.

Not everyone wants to build from source but that's what you have to put up with using a platform that is a a small minority. You can't get TurboTax, Paint.net or any number of other applications on Linux. That's the truth of being a Linux user (last year I was one for 10 years).

This statement assumes that my primary goal is increasing marketshare. Not to mention that every alternative I know of is proprietary and doesn't support Linux at all.

I will but only because of the number of people here, on MobileRead, use the Linux version. People who actively contribute and use Sigil on a regular basis. My goal is to make and keep Sigil being useful and helpful for ebook creation. As long as it's fun to work on and someone finds it useful than I will continue to work on it.

The idea of dropping Linux builds is simply a product of me trying to prioritize my time. For instance I haven't decided if I want to keep the x64 Linux build because the x86 version will work on the majority of x64 distors and Sigil doesn't get any real benefit from a x64 version.

I would just like to add you also have some users on OS/2 although our port is only v0.2.0.

The beauty of open source . Anyone can take the code and adapt it to their favorite OS.

Rolled back to 3.4
I just had a (multi) split (using the split button) go Wrong t times in a row (I aborted and grabbed a fresh Calibre converted file).

Split-off files ended up at the end of the list, the manifest was missing/name not updated files. Way too painful, but I repaired the damage to Flightcrew's standards

BTW The first time I launched Sigil from Calibre (open With).
The second time I shut down Calibre and opened Sigil and loaded the book.

I wouldn't want you to think we don't use it. I did most of the work on the EPUB version of Nobilis using Sigil on Ubuntu, and it's ended up being a success. If I hadn't had a useful editor, there's no way it would ever have happened, since I had to struggle through the process of making sidebars, galleries, and endless footnotes mostly by trial and error.

Having good software made it possible, and I don't think people will ever get involved in making their own ebooks if they don't have fairly simple access to that software, so yay Sigil!

Was this on 0.4.0RC2? I thought I'd caught all the problems that were occurring. If you're still seeing this on RC2 please open an issue and upload an example epub that won't split properly.

the beauty of the linux prebuilds was, that depending on the distro one uses the Qt dependancies when building from source as a user might trigger a whole load of KDE stuff not needed by Sigil itself - if you don't use KDE it's annoying.

Valloric had his linux builds done in a way to avoid that.

And since is proven, that the linux version performs better, people having even both OSems up and running prefer the linux variant

For information, the number of d/l does not necessarily equate to the number of users, for example I usually d/l the 64 bit linux binary for installation on 6 other linux boxes, mainly due to the size of linux d/l due to including static libraries which a lot of users already have, despite the problems of d/l half of kde as dependancies. Linux users also, imho, tend to be good testers as well.

This is true across all platforms.

I'm running Mac OS 10.5.8 and I don't seem to be able to run the program. When I click on it, I get a message that the application has quit.

I can send you the error report, if you'd like.

10.6 is the minimum supported version of OS X.
