3 weeks is actually quite good. No other current reader lasts that long.

Actually I love the change in covers. I like the leather much better than the plastic cover on the 500. I can see why folks prefer the 500 cover over the 505 because of the foldability but the 505 cover is superior in material and craftmansip. I hold the 505 like a book and love the cover as it seems much more rich and a higher overall quality.

Has anyone replaced the battery on the 500?( the short time i've had the 505 - less then a week- the battery life is better- still full bars- while the 500 would have down a bar)

The worst thing is the Sony policy about selling those things.

Why can't they sell it here in Europe.
It is very complicated and expensive for the rest of the world to buy readers.
I can understand they can not legally sell us books via Connect store. But why can't they sell us READERS?

I personally do not care about the Connect store.
There are other sources for books and texts. It takes me at least a week to read a book and that is plenty of time to find another one on the net.

Well according to another thread, Sony will be selling the reader in the UK sometime next year.

Sony's been experimenting with exploding batteries installed on competion laptops. Now the batteries installed on previous devices self destruct so you buy the newest device.
Kidding!

Mine still lasts about 3 weeks depending on use(Acquired January 07). What's your charging schedule, do you charge it when there are three bars left? Two? One? Or when it says it has to shutdown?

Usually I will wait till either the end of the day when I can charge it overnight or if I know I will be near the charger (say for the weekend) I will wait as long as I can till I *have* to charge it. There's nothing worse than sitting on the bus or plane when you can't read it at all because the battery is out of juice. Unfortunately this is where the older technology (books) beat the new generation of ebooks.

I try to drain the battery as much as possible and charge it as little as possible so as to extend the life.

It depends on the used memory. If you use memory card it will drain faster.
Also opening an rtf file loaded without the use of Connect software with many hundred pages drains battery unbeliveably quickly. You open a book for the first time after loading it into a card and 2 minutes later when the "bussy" symbol stops spinning the battery meter is one bar down.

A year in this bussiness is practically an eternity.

By the time they start selling them in UK the rest of the world will read books on A4 sized, full color e-paper displays with 300DPI ;-)
Well, I might be exagerating a little bit, but when they finally realize that they could sell them here there will be a strong competition strongly established in this market. Like Kindle, Booken, Hanlin, Walkbook, Iliad (with 300 hour reading tine on a single charge ;-) ) and a few other original or rebranded ones.

And the 510 will then be on the market...

Unfortunatelly, I don't use cards and read only standard lrf files made in BD.

Loss of the clock hack is the worst thing for me. The screen on my 500 went bad and I seriously considered getting another 500 model just to keep the clock. I figure that some smart person will figure out the clock hack again.

One think I've noticed is that the buttons are a little loud. It doesn't bother me since I don't read in bed. But if I did read in bed, the occasional click would bug my wife. You know how when you're almost asleep, the tiniest noises seem to be amplified. I can imagine how annoying the clicking of the next page button would be.
