Personally, I will be going for the upgraded backplane. Any added stability is a good thing in my opinion. I haven't had problems in the past, but I plan on using my iLiad for at least another 2 years until a larger display version comes out. For me, piece of mind goes a long way.

Or even peace of mind, 'cause "piece of mind" is what my husband is giving me about this! LOL, just joking, he's less convinced than I am about changing the casing, he reckons they should also do this for free if it has anything to do with the new battery... which is why I'm asking about it. I shall probably go for it, since I plan on having my beloved for a long, long time, if possible.

Is that your husband or your iLiad?

I don't know, I don't know .... not sure if I want to send my Iliad away EVER again; I'm just too, too used to it. I can live with the current battery life and as far as the back plate is concerned - isn't it cooler to own one of the original Mk. I Iliads, "the ones with the funky back?" Isn't that what the Ebay crowd will respond to when I sell it ten years from now?

True, it's a pity they didn't implement it a while ago, when I had to send my iLiad to be unbricked.

Oops, Freudian slip?

I'm sure the turnaround won't be too bad. I've been without my iLiad for periods of time before, it just make it that much more wonderful when you get it back.

Mine bricked itself on the 2.10 update, and I agree, it wasn't too bad, more anxiety about it travelling around than the actual time it took really. And anyway, lately I haven't been using it that much, 'cause it's a fag to format the books (my fault, I'm a nitpicker, I don't like the Mobi format, and the pdf has to be properly done). Hmmm... if I take the time it's away to get me some books ready...

If you have one problem, you have a problem, but sometimes when you have multiple problems they solve each other.

Well sure, but if they'll leave you alone, how much of a problem are they, really?

I think it is way too expensive. Irex has to open the device for the battery replacement anyways, so there is no extra time needed for replacing the back cover. 50 Euro for a piece of plastic is really steep.

Kinda depends really. My iLiad is a few weeks old and has a serial number just under 10000, so I assume that approximately 10000 gen 1 iLiads have been sold. The tooling for making the back cover was probably designed to do 10 or 100 times that number of parts, so the amortisation of the cost of the tooling per cover is going to be 10 or 100 times what they originally expected, and a plastic injection moulding tool like that could cost about £100,000. So the cost of each gen 1 back cover could be as much as £10 (€15) rather than 10p (€0.15) as originally planned. Consequently iRex may be trying to recover some of the investment on the gen 2 back cover tooling in the cost of the upgrades.

I have my Iliad in a cover all the time, so I do not believe the glass pane will benefit much with the back upgrade.
Or am I forgetting something?
