I just cancelled my Netflix subscription at the end of the monthly period. I have been a subscriber of Netflix for a few years but the last price hike was the last straw. If Netflix raised their prices because they needed additional revenue to stay alive then that's OK. If it's because they are greedy and are trying to squeeze more money out of subscribers then that's not cool. Either way I'm done with them. I'll just use Red Box, there's one less than 2 miles from me. Or I'll use Comcast on demand.

I should have also added that Netflix could have done a better job announcing the price hike. There should have been more details of why it was necessary. I received an email that basically said we are doubling your subscription, you can take it, downgrade or leave.

I don't have anything against netflix, but I was planning to get it for another few months and decided against it because of the price hike and the dearth of new stuff since my last subscription.

I suspect netflix has been giving people a incredible value for their money up to this point, while growing the content selection. You have a kind of chicken and egg problem. You need a broad subscriber base to be able to afford content and for negotiating purposes on the price of the content, but you can't charge full price when your selection is weak sauce. So they gave us a bargain for years, and now it's time to pay for what we're getting. They certainly didn't sell that idea very smoothly, as jersey noted. Not that it would have helped much.

The downside to the "unlimited" streaming model is you pay the same whether you are consuming 10 hours a day or just a little content every weekend, so the light users are subsidizing the heavy ones. When it was basically free on top of the disc plan, folks weren't as likely to complain about that imbalance. With the price increase, the burden-to-use ratio feels less just.

Yea I know what you mean. I pay over 180.00 a month to Comcast for cable TV, high speed Internet and telephone service. But to pay them 4 bucks for a movie once in awhile will be cheaper than Netflix. Besides some of the Netflix movies I get are free on Comcast on demand. Half the time I play a Netflix movie my wife tells me she already saw it on HBO, Showtime, etc.

I would never cancel my Netflix account.

Largely because I don't have one...

The price increase isn't an issue for me. What I don't like is the occasional stutter of streaming, which drives my girlfriend bonkers.

I watch Netflix at my her place, but at home, I prefer temporary downloads. If Netflix offered that option, I'd probably join -- as long as the option itself weren't an additional expense.

We get the One DVD at a Time (Bluray) and use the streaming regularly. We'll be keeping it the same for now but I'll be on the lookout for other services.

I looked into getting a Netflix account. But they charge even more for blue-ray. So no thanks.

This is what I did.

I cancelled the additional DVD service, went streaming only, but I subscribed to Amazon Prime too

This move will basically increase my monthly payments 4.25 dollars, but I will get free streaming from Amazon, which has most recent movies than Netflix (almost like getting DVDs via Netflix but faster) and I will take advantage of free 2 day shipping with Amazon prime.

I cancelled TV Cable (ATT UVERSE) just a month ago and using Roku2 now. I am saving about 90 dollars every month and I don't miss anything I had before, actually, I think I have more movies and selection now.

I'm in Canada and using Netflix here, which was only introduced a little over a year ago.

The selection is much, much, much smaller than Netflix USA and has never offered DVDs, but the selection of streaming video has grown steadily and hasn't slowed.

I'm concerned that we're paying so little for the service ($8 a month) because they're trying to build their Canadian presence, and it's only a matter of time before they're big enough to jack up the price significantly. Seeing this happen south of the border leads me to believe a price increase is an inevitable eventuality.

At this point in time, I don't think their selection is enough to justify a bigger price. We'd probably be willing to pay up to twice as much... if the selection was more than twice what it is now. We just couldn't justify giving them that much more given the fairly low percentage of what we like out of their selection to what they have.

Sorry, off topic but...

Are any of you that are using Netflix or Amazon maxing out on your data downloads or do you all have unlimited?

I might have to start a poll about ISP download limits (i.e. 200 gigabytes per month), if you have any, or if you pay as you go.

@Wetdogeared

No issues here in USA, so far. I am using AT&T UVERSE, 12Mbps package but I am not limited.

I've read though, that some ISPS (which also offer Cable TV) started increasing bills because high download rates, but has not happened to me before. I think they are not too happy about all these streaming options because they know that people are leaving because the high prices and poor programming.
