Google Books app does not license RMSDK, and I'm not even sure if what it downloads is even an ePub file, since they don't allow even sideloading of non-DRM ePub. I'm interested in an 'HD' eink device - should do nice things for small text. Though I'd rather it had a touch screen. [update: it does support ADEPT DRM. See the specs at http://local.iriver.com/usa/product/...p?lpCode=M0015. Also the close-up images of the font rendering look very nice.] Last edited by tomsem; 07-11-2011 at 08:12 PM. |

It looks like an intriguing e-reader. While BN and Kobo have gone the route of competing with the Kindle by introducing touch and a smaller form, iriver/Google are trying a sharper text over other eink devices. That's the most important part of reading for me, how the text actually looks, not the software capabilities or how the device looks. Ease of page turns is also important to me, especially as a lefty, and the page-turn lever in the middle of the iriver looks quite convenient. I hope a local Target has one this weekend, so I can check out the feel of it and compare the text with my Kindle.

Still, that screen is certainly very tempting, and it's possible that the team-up with Google has led to some Google engineers lending a hand with the software. We'll have to see. |

The google blog entry did say "personal documents" can be uploaded an synced. I think we need some clarification on that. This is a feature I have wanted Amazon to add... I would even pay for it... it would be a built in backup as well.

I think this ereader will appeal to the Sony ereader owners. I mean seriously- why would a Kindle/Nook owner care about a wifi ereader that can access google books? with a physical keyboard to boot ............

Does anyone know about its pdf capabilities? The 1024x768 resolution would be killer for reading details in a pdf document.

I read a few threads reviewing the European version of the istory HD, with some detailed descriptions of the pdf capabilities. The specs page on their site lists a good variety of supported formats, including personal documents and even comics. The Euro version evidently didn't have wifi, so they must have done some software upgrades to enable that, along with Google books integration, and I have to imagine with Google behind it they'll include a browser of some sort. Hopefully they'll be sending out some of the devices ahead of time to the various ebook review sites, so we can get some hands-on videos and reviews. One thread mentioned short supplies of them in Europe, so hopefully they have plenty here for a good Target launch--I'm sure Amazon isn't thrilled to have an ereader that looks much like the Kindle sitting next to it in stores, at the same price as the wifi K3, especially if the screen is noticeably sharper.

Such a Kindle 3 copy, principally the keyboard and size of the reader but it seems even more outdated in aspect than the Kindle. The middle Guitar Hero like button does seem interesting tho.
While the better resolution and refreshing rate seems interesting I wouldn't buy another 6" for now. I'm only going to buy another when the differences seem really relevant or big improvements. |

I don't like the placement of the navigation buttons. I'm to used to having them on the sides.

2Gb Memory but 1.4Gb of that is System ! ... Thankfully it has an SD Slot for external memory. It kind of looks ok, not keen on the colors, Will it be US only or will we in the UK / Europe get it too ?
Either way, I think I'll wait and see how good the screen is and what can be sideloaded, before considering buying one, |

Interesting...but not really compelling. As an aside, I tried google books for a while and I didn't care much for it at all.
