I'm sorry you took this the way you did, I didn't read that into it. It sounded like two thought processes got jumbled into one sentence to me....I'm hoping you were just having a bad day when you responded.

As for your last statement please don't blame the victim. Yes she was careless but someone dishonest was the actual criminal here. I've been careless numerous times in my life. A couple of times I suffered the consequences, other times I got off without incident. Life. But the pain is still there never the less when I have lost something.

I've often talked about that same sense of community in the summer of 2003. The absence of an immediate community is perilous for the individual, and 2003 made some of us remember what having a community feels like.

Portable electronics are great in certain ways, but in others, they can lead to social isolation. We're all walled off in private pleasure rooms with our iPads, smartphones, PMPs, game consoles and, yes, even eReaders. The blackout forced people to talk to one another directly. Power lines were out, computers were unusable, devices couldn't be charged, TVs were off and so were most phones. You could feel the energy of people interacting in the street as they became a kind of collective sentient organism.

Yes, certain merchants and scavengers took advantage of the situation, but there was also a lot of spontaneous good will. A friend said that being there was like starring in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing: Everyone was out on their neighborhood stoop exchanging news and talking about the end of life as we know it.

Toward the end of the blackout, I could feel the beginnings of real social activism. It was an inspiring feeling until the lights came back on, batteries were charged and people returned to their artificial paradise.

Reminds me of my first internet date. I had fresh photos made by my colleague and when I showed up the guy went stark white and agape and said: "But you look exactly like you look on your photos!!" As if it were something bad. After some more dates I knew while he was scared to death. NO ONE put recent photos in their profiles. If they are of the more recent kind, they are at least 20 yrs old and 100 pounds lighter, with hair still on their heads and not only on the backs of their hands

Sorry to hear about your reader. I can feel your pain. A couple of days ago I dropped my iPad and shattered the screen. I am just sick about it. How could I be so careless. i had my hand in a splint and lost the grip and out it came and landed face first on concrete step. Again I am so sorry for your loss.
