Correct! I didn't think it would be that easy with the clues had I listed. Anyway, the explanation for the clues (where needed):

Clue 2: Features two reteamings between its stars. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis were in the movie "Some Like It Hot" (1959). Tony Curtis and Natalie Wood were in the movie "Sex And The Single Girl" (1964).

Clue 4: The person who scored this movie has worked with the director on a number of movies. Henry Mancini worked on many of director Blake Edwards' films, including the Pink Panther series.

Clue 5: Received an Academy Award, but not for best picture. "The Great Race" won an Academy Award for Best Sound Effects.

Hamlet53, it's your turn.

A lucky educated guess!

This is the clue that made me think of The Great Race, especially the mention of a pie fight.

This further added to the supposition. Lemmon and Curtis were always such a winning combination. I am surprised that that 'lightning in a bottle' was not used more often.

The date made sense, but the two other clues I did not even consider. As I said just an educated guess. Something I learned the full advantage of years ago when taking the SAT and GRE.

So new film. I hope I manage to hit the sweet spot of difficulty with these clues.
  1. Also released in the 1960s
  2. A minor piece of dialog was dubbed before release because of a real world event.
  3. Another film inspired by the same story was released in the same year
  4. A character voices a controversy that persists to this day
  5. The first film appearance for an actor that would become a major star.

Correct. Maybe I made this a little too easy? Clue #3? Anyway for those interested:

Consistent with his Texan persona, as originally filmed Major Kong (played by Slim Pickens) says, after inspecting the survival kit:

“Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Dallas with all that stuff.” JFK was assassinated in Dallas before the film was released, and the line was dubbed to substitute “Las Vegas” for “Dallas.”

The movie Fail Safe, a more serious take on the possibility of accidental nuclear war, was released a few weeks before Dr. Strangelove

This was actor James Earl Jones' first film role, a minor part as one of the bomber crew.

Clues #2 and #4 were my jumping off point. And Dr. Strangelove is one of my favorite movies so the pieces just fell into place.

Onward

Clue 1 - 1970's film

Clue 2 - Police Drama

Clue 3 - although this film is award winning, it was the director's next film that is argueably more famous (also award winning)

Clue 4 - The film director also directed an Opera in the 00's (decade of 2000 - 2009)

Clue 5 - Includes one of the most famous car chase scenes

The French Connection?

If this is correct, and I am 99.99% sure it is, maybe it is what SneakySnake was going for and he should get credit?
