even though i've experienced no issues since installing 8.7 on the 24th, i installed the new 8.7 update anyway.

this made me think of how much i appreciate your update policies just the way they are.

thanks

As a person who had continual crashes with the original 8.7 release, and then went through 4 test builds with Kovid I had to say THANKS to him and the entire team.

You're welcome It was quite a challenge tracking down the source of the crashes as the source was an obscure bug in Qt (that we still dont fully understand) and neither of us could reliably reproduce the crash on our computers.

Hi, I just downloaded v0.8.7 and Calibre will no longer recognize my Kobo When I plug in my eReader, I get the following error message:

Error Communicating with Device

no such column: ___ExpirationStatus

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 81, in run
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\device.py", line 332, in _books
File "site-packages\calibre\devices\kobo\driver.py", line 213, in books
OperationalError: no such column: ___ExpirationStatus

Along the bottom of the window, however, after the version info, it does say "Connected to Kobo reader". Selecting the device tab just gives a blank screen, though.

Thanks so much for your time!

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but I think this belongs here. I am getting frequent crashing as well. I have had a crash deleting a book, changing a cover, deleting an author. Not all from the tag browser. Was going through it author by author, weeding out dupes and unwanted things. I was getting these with 8.4 but not as bad so I got the latest update today, and it got worse not better. Cannot figure out how to turn tag browser off in preferences, sorry. But not sure if that would help. This library is huge (about 5000 books - and full of errors in spelling, genre, author so I am going book by book, fixing it) Into my second week... Crashes do not help.

Click the Luggage tag icon to hide tag browser.

Now to your problem.
What OS?
Calibre can use quite a chunk of CPU power during changes/converts. If something is weak in your system it can rear up.

Windows. HD errors. run disk repair tool (chkdisk)
then defrag the drive.
weak RAM: download and run Memtest86+ (on the CD menu of a Ubuntu LiveCD (just boot the CD) (Then try Ubuntu without having to install it )

Hi theducks,
re: windows drive errors - program and OS (xp sp3 all updates installed) -- should I do chkdsk on my 1 tb drive? I may die of old age first. Or, do it on the boot drive which is where Calibre program lives also. RAM brand new, just installed. And not to sound like an idiot but I do not know what Ubuntu even is....

I am going to reinstall latest version, then shut down everything, including eset. I checked my fonts folder, nothing in there but fonts (gosh!)

Thanks for the tip for the tag browser. I did figure one thing out, and this may be significant. I got a handle on sub-cat settings, and discovered that sorting by setting to first letter makes a crash on every metadata edit - including changing covers, changing text in the description box, changing genre or deleting a book. Using disabled seems to help some.

Going to try a few other things before chkdsk, since I do not want to disable my entire laptop for the time it will take to do it, since I need access to that drive all day long for other things.

eta: discovery - .net optimization module service running due to a .net update.
More about this here

and I found that Adobe Elements file tracker service was running. I recently installed it to replace photoshop. I shut that down also. Since it monitors all image types like the jpegs and pngs I am working with in covers, it may interfere and cause crashing there.

Checked event monitoring while I was nosing about in the mgmt module. Found my errors are all occurring as:

Faulting application calibre.exe version 0.8.7.0 faulting module python27.dll version2.7.1150.1013 fault address 0x00008bc5

There are 40 of them from yesterday alone. SO... checked system for possible dupe of python libraries and found that dropbox uses python 25. Could that be creating a conflict? Did not have drop box running, plus both those dlls are in their respective folders, not in windows dll folder or cache.

You probably need to do it on Both drives. Calibre writes to the Library folder, uses TMP files. You have drive problems, this will find them (eventually )

Ubuntu is A dialect of Linux

I see 1 or 2 Python27.dll errors a MONTH (daily use of Calibre).
Turning all that indexing stuff off will help performance.

found errors on boot drive, none on external. Deleted everything in every temp folder, turned off all unnecessary crap, let .net finish its updates, defragged boot drive (external did not need it). ready to try again. wish me luck.

Well it ran for about ten edits without the python error recurring. So, having fixed drive errors on boot drive, shutting down windows indexing services, all adobe services, searching for virus, deleting every tmp and temp file folder on all four drives, I started it up. Four edits later, bang! I took a peak into the Calibre2 directory and there was a ton of stuff that was left from previous upgrades. So, I downloaded 8.6, uninstalled .7, made sure that directory was gone, and reinstalled and launched. Now, we shall see....

sigh. now I am getting crashes in qtwebkit4.dll in 8.6

I used 8.4 happily for months and months and months.
