Kobo and Barnes and Noble are unrelated companies; in fact, they are direct competitors.

Even Kobo and Borders are distinctly separate companies; the programmers of Kobo have nothing to do with Borders' web development team. Borders is a minority shareholder (among several minority shareholders) in Kobo. Borders online division is owned entirely by Borders.
