My nearest library is a lot closer (a few minutes' walk) to my home than the nearest McDonald's or Starbuck's and I like the atmosphere at the library a lot more. But yes, it is nice to have other wi-fi options as well.

I have 3 McDonald's and 4 Starbucks closer to me. Atmosphere doesn't matter, since I'd access from my car.

I have one McDonald's and one Tim Horton's closer to me than me library, but only by the width of the street separating them. Speaking of which, I have a book waiting for me, so, "Ta ta for now"...
