I know what you are saying my friend, but what i'm saying is you can side load a mobi book and it's not converted to azw....if you email a mobi book to the kindle it will be converted, and have an azw extension..........there are minor but significant differences.....if you worked w/ these two for awhile, you might or might not realize this....

(The tools work great, except on the azw files, evidently I need to do something else for those). That's interesting to know, that when emailing docs, they are converted to azw not mobi. |

It might be that you simply downloaded books from your Kindle into Calibre that you forgot that you had side loaded them as Mobi's at some earlier date? Last edited by markdek; 06-22-2011 at 07:44 AM. |

I don't think so, but I will have to check. In fact I bought 23 books yesterday, downloaded them to K4PC, imported to Calibre, and checked to be sure the DRM had been removed. I have a format column in Calibre and it shows them all as mobi. Maybe because I d/l to K4PC not directly to the Kindle?
Another example---a freebie I got months ago called The Bite Before Christmas by Heidi Betts--got it from Amazon, it shows up in Calibre as Mobi. Another example--Slave by Cheryl Brooks was an Amazon freebie. It is mobi in Calibre. A recent freebie, Sheltering hearts by Robyn Carr--also mobi. If you import a DRM'd .azw file into Calibre with the de-DRM plugin installed and enabled, it'll show up as a .mobi in Calibre. It's a side effect of the DRM stripping process.

Oh good, thanks. I was wondering why there was a difference.
Can you explain why a file did not convert to mobi? I have a couple that imported as AZW and still have DRM. Also, some of the amazon files converted to HTMLZ (I'm sure you guys know that, just thought I'd mention it) Last edited by booklover6; 06-22-2011 at 08:40 AM. |

If it converted to HTMLZ, then it was a Topaz file to begin with. If they import as AZW and still have DRM, then the plugin failed for some reason. You should report the details to Alf so debugging can take place.
And for the record AZW files (unless they are Topaz) are not being "converted" at all in the process. The DRM is just being removed and the file extension is being renamed to .mobi |
