Turns out I got my 9 to 1 from your quote and not the article. The article doesn't say that Nook owners are 10 times more likely to buy women's magazines. It doesn't even say all women's mags sell more on the Nook than the iPad. It just said a couple titles MAY be selling more. That could be explained by marketing and promotion of those titles.

Also, Nook buyers are more likely to be women than iPad buyers.

On further reflection, this article is nothing but a repackaging of stuff we already know.

1. Women read more than men do. That's not a surprise.
2. eReaders, likewise sell more to women than men -- not THAT much more, but more.
3. The iPad is sold with MANY functions, not just reading. Ergo, it's market is more the market of a "tech device" than that of a pure reader. This shouldn't be surprising. And ergo, more men than women have iPads. But not THAT much more.

4. Women buy more romance ebooks than men. LOTS more.
5. Men like porn. Big surprise.

Really -- there is no actual news in this article. A 10% gender difference for eReaders or iPads is not that big a gender gap, either way.

Since women read more than men, and women read far more romance books than men. Is there any news that romance ebooks are a big seller just as romance BOOKS are a big seller? Where is the news in this?

The way I heard it the visual vs. spoken stimulation is a result of our hunter/gatherer past. The men would have to be quiet while sneaking up on animals they were hunting and so used hand signals and the like while the women of a group would be more likely to be gathering fruits, nuts, herbs etc. and would have the time to talk to one another since they wouldn't be likely to scare away game since they were gathering food stuffs. The idea is that over generations this stimulus became sort of hot wired into the brain somehow. I don't know how accurate the theory is but who knows there might be some basis somehow.

Was there ever any doubt? Certainly if I see something advertized I'm more likely to pay attention if it's advertized with a female human being than if it's a man who is holding or using whatever it is.
