Gecko, I agree to a, point. In the long run a good selection of custom apps that utilize the unique qualities of the Edge will go a long way to being a good selling point for the Edge. As it is now, the apps in the app store are free Android apps really meant for a phone display. The only problem is, it will take some time to develop quality custom apps for the Edge. I know, had we gotten the SDK 8 months ago there'd most likely be a nice selection by now, but, things being as they are with Entourage being a small company, the more immediate visible improvement to its average user would be Froyo 2.2. Once that is at a state to be released, I believe they should take the SDK serious. The sooner we get it, the sooner Entourage will get some great custom apps.
One thought I have, though, is if they are at a stand still waiting for their partner to send them some code (as has been stated) they could give their engineers a week to get the SDK at least to the point where we can get started. Last edited by StevenP; 02-08-2011 at 03:46 PM. |

Mr Jennings clearly lacks imagination in these matters. If you want details you should probably PM me to keep the forum from getting filtered.

My comments may be a dead giveaway that I have no knowledge of business at all. But, I'll add my 2 yen anyway. It seems to be that the people "made happier" by the release of Android 2.2 are going to be people who already own the device and are unhappy to be stuck using 1.6. The big advantage of 2.2 will be speed, Flash and the ability to use apps that are only working on 2.2. I kind of doubt that 2.2 on the eDGe in March 2011 will do much to attract lots of new customers, when other devices will be shipping with Android 3.0 (supposedly anyway, such as the Motorola Xoom). It seems that people will be attracted to the eDGe because they see the potential in the unique hardware. After they are "hooked" by the hardware they are going to want a robust app store and the ability to use the latest. Thats a problem, at least as I see it. The SDK could attract new customers by expanding the software base.

It just occurred to me that there might be another reason for delaying an SDK: might there license restrictions from Adobe pertaining to use of their DRM? Maybe Entourage needs to ensure that you can't defeat the DRM by screen-scraping the e-ink side; maybe Adobe has to approve their SDK to ensure that; maybe Entourage can't discuss it because of an NDA. Maybe that's why they disabled root access via adb. Who really knows?
Yet another reason I despise DRM: enforcing it requires locking down the system. |
