Development Non tech Community firmware

Great to see some sensible discourse at last. I hope that the food fight has now ended and that we can produce some interesting extensions for the eDGe once the source code is available. What jcase, robot et al have achieved thus far even in the absence of full source (and in Justin's case (pun intended ) the absence of his own eDGe !) is phenomenal. Who knows what can be achieved when they can work with the source code rather than having to hack against it.......interesting times ahead, methinks

I wanted to make one comment about the recent board commotion about GPL code:

I know you guys have your hearts in the right place. Open Source software is very important for advancing technology, especially for the little guy, and we at enTourage respect that and are excited to participate. I feel like we have already explained ourselves and satisfied the crowd that the rest of the GPL code is on the way. But please keep in mind for the future however, that when dealing with small start-ups like ours, don't squeeze so tight that you end up hurting them. Like most start-ups, we're just busy people trying to deliver a high quality product.

We'll make a post in this dev board when the rest of the GPL code is posted to the website.

I agree - time to move on. If I can help in anyway. I have been in IT for 20+ years, from software developmen, hardware thru management. I can test, hack some, etc.

I want to drop in and let you know that we did find that we did not release the complete source code package last Friday. The engineering team is putting together the package again now. Hello all,

I just got my EDGE and have rooted it. I would like to help with feature suggestions and any testing I can do. I am a RHCE and already have a rooted HTC dream/G1 running Cyanogen V4 so this process is not new to me. Also I can do ad-hoc tethering testing as well as communication testing between my Android Cell and the Edge.

Has anyone looked into the way the Cyanogen rom is deployed as a possible way to get the EDGE to have the apps put out by Google?

BTW: I was 100% successful in using wi-fi to tether the Edge to my Android phone. What needed to be done was to install a terminal emulator and run iwconfig commands in the cli to manually configure the mlan0 NIC to use ad-hoc and set the essid. If anyone want to work with me to create a GUI for this let me know.

I am not a developer but a Linux engineer with > 12 years exp. My "development" work would be in the form of scripts that others can put into their front ends and pass data to from their front ends. 2 things I would like to see added if possible in the next release would be vi and a bash/bash-like cli (history, tab completion, etc). If possible adding the copy command would be VERY helpful.

to get the EDGE to connect to any ad-hoc network you only need the following 2 commands run in a terminal windows from root on the device (you will need an external USB keyboard though since the on-screen Kbd does not have a way to make it stay on screen):

iwconfig mlan0 mode ad-hoc
iwconfig mlan0 essid <your essid>

you can see what networks are available with:

iwlist mlan0 scanning

Let me know if I can help with anything else. Also if anyone can point me to a good on screen keyboard i can add that I can set to stay on the screen until I close it that would help!

If I can get with kumai this weekend, Ill compile bash for the eDGe if there isnt already one.

rhce_v3, I suggest you to use Gscript http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=486486 (It allow to create shortcuts to bash scripts right on the home screen).
as for bash, I prefer ash from BTEPro (http://www.magicandroidapps.com/wiki...l_Emulator_Pro), it has both history and suggestions.

P.S. it's good to see more tech savvy people coming

Hope new released source code will be oke and it will help you in building nice software for the eDGe.
