Probably nobody is here, all left the company, they use a contracted distribution centre, contracted (unpaid?) IT? one man business model?

Source code availability

Although the eDGe source code is not available yet, we are working on putting a package together and it will be available soon.

Once it is ready for distribution we will let everyone know and provide directions on how to get it. In the meantime we thank you for your patience, and rest assured you will not have to wait long.

-Dan

Unfortunately at this time I do not have information on when the next update will be available. As soon as a date has been set for next update's release we will provide you with all the information about when it will arrive and what it will contain.

done, are you aware you are violating the GPL licence but not releasing the code. If code is not release within a month which is very reasonable I will start the process with the GPL Violations to take the official route

FWIW, given the unprofessional and immature language--and its tone--of the forum comments that have asked for the SDK, if I were enTourage, I'd be about half a nanosecond from telling you to go do something terribly indecent to yourselves.

+1

My take on the situation is that enTourage doesn't want to release a SDK until it's complete, well-designed, and they have the time to assist developers in getting any eDGe-specific applications ready. Right now they're focusing on the 2.x upgrade and additional functionality for educational-specific applications like Blackboard. Understandably, getting those things are a higher priority than support for developers since they will have a greater impact on back-to-school sales.

I would encourage prospective developers who are frustrated by a perceived lack of progress on the SDK to take a look at the big picture. Whether the SDK is released today or a few months from now, economies of scale dictate that a sufficiently large user base must exist before developing eDGe-specific apps is economically viable. Thus, enTourage's complete focus on producing the 2.x upgrade, etc. is actually in the prospective developers interest. Moreover, successful app development requires a partnership between each developer and the device manufacturer--for either to profit, there needs to be symbiosis between the two as your long-term objectives are actually one in the same: making money off of delivering an enhanced user experience. Making threats and trying to spread completely unfounded rumors are not only wholly unprofessional, but indeed counterproductive to your stated interests as well.

Vic- of course he's aware; there's no need to be snide about it. The EE itself lets you read the licenses, and Dan said they read every posting, so I think he probably gets it.

Dan- thanks for the update about source code availability; I'm looking forward to it!

Everyone, keep in mind that source code for the GPL software (which they have an obligation to publish) is not the same as an SDK (which they are under no obligation to publish). I would love to see an SDK, and my impression of the EE software itself gives me high hopes that the SDK, when they do release it, will be well designed. The grumbling (as I understand it, and maybe excluding some vehement posts) is mainly about EE meeting their legal obligation to provide particular source code, and not about their eventual release of an SDK. Waiting to publish an SDK makes sense; waiting to publish GPL source code seems like foot-dragging.

To some, having source code serves as a crutch for an SDK; it provides more information about the platform, allowing programs to be written for it, independently from the support of EE. So you have people like Robot, for instance, who is clearly into hacking the device-- which I'm very grateful for, as it's allowed me to add fonts to my system and try other neat tricks. From that point of view (I'm not trying to put words in your mouth, Robot), it isn't that EE is not supporting them; it comes across as EE actively holding them back, a point of view bolstered by the GPL.

But Nia, you're right that some of the posts have taken on an immature, accusatory tone. I think we should all take a breath, encourage EE to release GPL source code in a timely manner (which it seems they are preparing to do), and look forward later on to a well-designed SDK.

Cheers everybody!

I think they managed to upset Robot, the community should attract programmers not alienate them. I did made the point regarding SDK and source code. Edge are not obliged to release a SDK, despite they will cut they own roots but not doing this, bust THEY HAVE THE LEGAL OBLIGATION to release the source.
Also please note the censorship started now. they locked the android 3 thread. well done!
