OK, I got it working. It turned out to have nothing to do with the update.zip file I was using. The problem was that the sd card was not being recognized correctly by the bootloader or update script, even though I can mount it fine on the EE. Using a different sd card solved that, and now I'm running as root.
Thanks!! |

I am looking forward to making my EE root--able.... I have copied several flash extensions from Opera and Iceweasel as well as the plugin installed through wine from one of my x86 linux distros. /system/libs seems to be where the flash should be...has anyone trid that yet? Until I have sudo privileges , I will have to wait..... I am just pleased to see that su is an option....

EE is ARM, not x86 proccessors. So your libs from x86 will not work. Also plugins from opera will not help, so the best you can do is to compile firexfox for EE. There were the port for arm proccessors.

That makes sense about the ARM architecture. I will try compiling FF tonight. Thanks!
I do not see Grub or Lilo. Do ARM devices use a different Method.? |

IMO yes, but I'm not so good in linux, so you better read this

neither grub nor lilo are how these things boot. I don't know a whole lot about the NAND boot process, nor do I own an eDGe, so I can't verify this. However, in the context of android on phones, what ends up happening is you have a root image that gets flashed to the internal flash memory (NAND, it's essentially a ROM area on the flash storage), and the stock bootloader that has the kernel and so forth built in just boots from there.
On phones, you can also flash the bootloader, for instance on my HTC Touch, you have to flash a new NBH (basically the bootloader, kernel, initrd, etc.) if you want to be able to then flash a new rom to your phone. I'm assuming the eDGe does something similar, given that it's roughly a similar device. This is a pretty standard way of doing things when it's not a computer. |

If you say "sdcard", do you mean the actual sd card slot, or the internal memory that is presented in the file system as /sdcard? EDIT: OK, you where talking about the real sd card

I am not expert in development of Linux and Android systems so i don´t want to try to root (don´t want to break my EE!). But... I think that EE have a lot of possibilities!!! I saw a video in Youtube "How to Install Ubuntu Linux on your Nexus One or Android phone!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN4c61ETCWg :
Could you install Ubuntu Netbook Remix for ARM Processors in our Edge Entourage (in USB-Stick, maybe)? You could use your EDGE as a real netbook, with Firefox, Openoffice, and thousands of other programs. And i think that there is an application in Ubuntu to run Android applications too (to control E-ink Reader, for example). You could use mouse, keyboard, printer and other external interfaces (USB tv card...). I would like to read other formats in the e-ink side (txt, fb2, MsWord, lit, ppt, pdb... as Hanlin V3 do!) and a better zooming tool, which can move you around the text (as Irex Dr1000 do) Android is good, but sometimes I think it´s a System for Mobilephones, not for netbooks. Maybe I am dreaming, but it would be cool! Please, do it... :-))) |

supermarkitos2004, it's possible, but don't see much interest in it.

it would open a lot of possibilities and maybe an other platform to develop for the eDGe if no cooperation with entourage is possible.

Robot, have you been sucessful in getting adbd working? I would really need that in order to develop comfortably on the eDGe. My build environment is built around using adb to push, debug, and monitor builds on the device itself. Just curious on your progress. I know this isn't really much of dev community, but I'd like to know where you're at with your hacking. Cheers!
