I received a payback on my central heating cost and dediced to spent it for a reader. I had been an avid reader all my life and was in the habit to give my books away as any flat I ever lived in started to grow too small after a while.
I bought an Italice, its basically like a Cybook Gen3, and after a couple of days I totally forgot I was reading on a reader and tried to turn my pages like in a pbook over and over again. As happy as I was with the Italica, it made me wish for a touchscreen reader in the very first week. In December I dicided to splurge on a Sony PRS-350 180€=$260 and have to say I never spent money better in my entire life!!! It has been the joy of my life ever since. I call it my magical book as it is pure magic to me how many books it contains. And right now it wears an Oberon cover with a fairy to look the part ![]() |

I wanted an e-ink reader for a long time (actually, ever since Sony brought out the very first one...) But either they weren't available in my area or waaaaay too expensive.
But then the e-ink explosion started in Europe (which was much later than in the US). I went to the CeBit 2 years ago and saw my first e-ink reader there (the Foxit reader). I also talked to the people from BeBook and liked what I saw there. So, when the BeBook Mini came out, I bought it asap. It's a nice sturdy little reader that reads mobipocket. (DRM was never important to me, I've had to strip that for a long time, as I had more than 3 devices: 2 PDA's, 1 PC and 1 laptop and for a while a WinMobile phone). It is seeing a bit less action since I've got my Sony. But I never take the Sony with me, so the Mini is my on-the-road-reader. And mobipocket isn't my format of choice anymore on my e-ink readers, but rather PDF (home-grown). So, the fact that the Sony doesn't read mobipocket isn't a problem ![]() |

Well first I bought a Sony PRS-300. After using it for a while I thought that it was rather basic in terms of it's functionality and decided to upgrade to something better. I now use the K3. My main reasons for choosing to buy it were
1. Ability to download books directly to the device 2. Linked to dedicated book store with more books than the stores I was currently using 3. Good customer support network in place in case I encounter problems 4. Ability to read and sync my books on other devices 5. Increased memory 6. Bigger range of font sizes and ability to change line spacing, font, words per line etc Less important reasons: 7. Ability to highlight, annotate and search my books 8. Text to speech 9. Web browser 10. Ability to listen to store audiobooks - I have other devices which can do this but it's nice to be able to keep all my books together. 11. Pearl E-ink screen Last edited by shanghaichica; 06-07-2011 at 03:00 PM. |

I brought my nook classic in March. For me, the initial primary factors were not being locked into any one store and being able to borrow library books. The nook and the Sony readers both allow this. I love the touch feature of the Sony but what ultimately made me decide on the nook was the price. While I love the design and the touchscreen of the Sony readers, I felt that I ultimately couldn't justify the price (at least not right now). My nook does everything I want it to do and while initially, I did wonder if I made the wrong choice, I love it now. In fact, I love it so much that I put it on eBay and MR to sell for some cash but then I decided to keep it. I couldn't really bear to part with it.

I decided I wanted one early last year. Sony models were too expensive (and the touch tech made the screen clarity not so great at the time).
I didn't want to be locked into Amazon, so I didn't want a Kindle - I wanted epub so that I could price shop around between stores. Little did I know the Agencies would price-fix their way out of that...but hey. I was torn between the first Kobo and the original Nook and decided either would do. Wife ordered me the Kobo for father's day, but I changed my mind to the Nook at the last minute for the freebie coupons for instore, wi-fi, etc. She let me switch ![]() |

I was taking a graduate level class and a fellow student had a Kindle 2. I spoke to him several times about it and how he used it for his school work. I talked to my wife about it and surprisingly in a couple of weeks for my birthday she got me my Kindle 2. That was in January 2010.

I never thought I wanted an ereader... and them my library closed for renovations. It will be closed for a few years. I really needed free books! So I wanted a reader for library books. That ruled out the Kindle right away. I thought I would get a Nook, but when I looked at it in the store, it just looked big and clunky and outdated. It looked like they needed a new model. This was right around the time of the Nook Color announcement. I was hoping that announcement was going to be something more like the recent Nook Touch announcement. I knew I wanted e-ink so Nook Color was out. I had to look for something else. Couldn't get a Kindle, couldn't stand the Nook. That's what led me to the Sony. I was willing to pay a premium for it, just because I liked it better in my hands.

I have been reading ebooks for over 10 years, starting with a Palm PDA. Still have a TX and a SD card with 75 books on it. Most of the Michael Connelly books are there. Never got too interested in a Kindle as they used to be $359. Then Sony was having a contest for their PRS-505 so I did some research. By signing up for a Sony Card I got one for $150. Actually I think I found out about the contest on here.

I used to read a lot on my Palm T|5, started out in the days of PeanutPress. I had probably about 50 books on it. I still have it, but haven't used it in 2-3 years.

Same here. I don't add books to it anymore. In fact one of the reasons for getting the Sony is that I had a 64 bit OS computer and couldn't sync anymore. That issue has been resolved but now there are better formats like epub and better ereaders to read them on.

I wasn't interested in an ereader, till last year. I like the smell of rotting pulp, which one reason I prefer old comics.
![]() I got reading books on my ipod about late 2009, because it was hard to rock my sons and hold a large book. Not to mention the light bothered my younger son. I found I liked reading on it, but I like books too. I was happy to read on my ipod for awhile, because its so easy to carry around. Plus all the separate book stores were easy with the ipod. Alas I have no free bookcase space yet again. I am reading more and more on my ipod too. Two book cases are taken over by my kids books. Seriously can kids have to many books? My books keep getting moved to the attic or garage sale. It was time to make the switch. I decided a couple of months ago to start looking into it. Yeah I am still looking. I loved the Sony's but they were expensive and I didn't have the money at the time. I bought a Kobo, which i really liked. I decided that I did need a dictionary function for all my books though. I returned that and was waiting for the new Nook to be announced. I hated the old nook. Not happy with some issues with the nook touch, but liked the form factor a lot. Surprised to see the new Kobo touch announced also, currently waiting for that to be released to see the reviews. I am glad they kept the quilted back. So close to just preordering the Kobo. Might wait for the new Kindle later this year just to see or maybe Sony will come out with an announcement. |
