When the company was alive they could have been resistant to releasing source because they saw it as protecting their assets. Many companies don't understand the benefits of open source and look at it as giving up their IP and giving a leg up to competitors. Now those assets aren't worth a darn with them closing up shop. I don't see anyone purchasing the rights to buggy software for a failed device from a failed company. Might I was well the source code and make an impact on the community instead of fading into obscurity.

It's not just that... Many big, you-know-who-they-are, companies refuse to allow their software developers to install any open-source tools for development, tracking changes etc. The reason is that if something goes wrong, they need someone to blame. This is why huge companies have ridiculous service contracts to provide development tools and why bigger companies pay for them: they come with support contracts and an ability to pass the buck if their dev tools result in glitches. Even though many comparable (or better) dev tools exist entirely for free in the world of open space, I've known people fight for years in a big company to be allowed to install them on company machines.

I'm not suggesting whether this was or wasn't part of Entourage's thinking, just that there's more than one reason why open source isn't embraced by private companies.
