In my limited experience, cozy mysteries come in two flavours: the Louise Penny sort which is a detective solving a murder but in a small village backdrop with somewhat eccentric characters ... it could be Agatha Christie or Gladys Mitchell inspired; the other being closer to "romantic mystery" where the hero is almost always female, often an amateur sleuth, such as Carolyn G Hart's Death on Demand series. In both cases, there is limited sex and while there is almost always at least one murder, it's not gory -- no forensics, morgue dissections, etc.
Contrast that to "thrillers" where there is often a lot of explicit detail and pulse-pounding suspense -- Ian Rankin or James Patterson. Or the more traditional "hard boiled" tales like Robert B Parker's Spenser novels which feature intelligent characters, sometimes very nasty villians, but where examining every drop of blood is not important and where romance is limited. Sophie's Choice was a heart-breaking movie and created Meryl Streep's movie career. |

i asked because both cozy mysteries i looked at on the sunshine deals had the similar plot: someone the main character knows died, then someone else is murdered and said MC is blamed for it. it almost seems like i'm reading the same book with a different environment

Did anyone notice an issue with Dervish House, in that the first letter of the first word of each chapter stands on a separate line from the rest of the text, at least on the Kindle? It looks like an error to me. I took a look at the preview of the print book, and it's a large, upper case first letter that doesn't look like it's translated across properly. I know this might seem a minor point to some people, but I just wanted to know if anyone else had noticed that, particularly since Pyr - the publishers of this edition - are normally sticklers for presentation of their ebooks as much as their dead tree editions.

I have no idea - but my dad reads police procedurals, so I'm sure he'd like this. One of the customer reviews on Amazon is from a policeman who had this to say :"almost like a manual on being an officer" so I thought that was a pretty good recommendation!
