Interesting. But a) does Amazon sell Kindle batteries and b) if they do what does a Kindle battery cost? I'm guessing that the warranty wouldn't be an issue because by the time a battery should be expected to fail the warranty period should be long since expired.

Does anyone know how it affects battery life if you never turn off your Kindle but just leave it on stand-by when not in use?

My Kindle 3 will be given to my wife when the Kindle 4 is introduced. I expect that to happen later this year. I gave my Sony PRS 900 to my wife when the Kindle 3 was introduced.

Like DiapDealer I rarely turn my Kindle 3 off and though I've only had it for not quite 3 months I have noticed that it on average is about a week between recharges as I read, play games and occasionally turn the wi-fi on during the average week. How that will effect the overall lifespan of the battery I haven't a clue, but it hasn't seemed to have had a bad effect on the unit in the short term certainly.

Heck, my aunt's 486 Win 98 PC is still playing her one solitaire game just the way she wants it to. (I did insist she let me give her an LCD monitor last year, though.) ApK Last edited by ApK; 06-02-2011 at 12:01 PM. |

My original Kindle (a K2-US) failed at about 16 months but it wasn't the battery. The screen went bad. It didn't even occur to me to call Amazon to replace it because it was covered under my American Express extended warranty. They refunded my purchase price which was nice because the price of the Kindles had dropped dramatically by then.
The next Kindle I bought in July 2010 (a refurb K2-US) is still going strong and I use it as my back-up Kindle ... mostly around water etc. I take it out by the pool where the kids are splashing around and into the bathtub. It needs to be charged up about every other week. My K3, bought last year at release shows no degradation at all. The prices are so low now that I really don't worry so much about longevity. I figure I'll be wanting a new device well before it stops working. |

the guy in the video really glosses over 'press the middle part of the cover and slide it upwards slightly until it is separated', which is important. oh well! |

I've seen the video before, as it's how I learnt how to get the cover off to get it back on (long story involving a large drop). There's no screws in K3 cover, even in the video so don't know where the poster got those instructions.

About turning off the Kindle mentioned a couple of times above: it has been said on this forum a couple of times that if you are not planning on using your Kindle for a long time (e.g. more than a few days) it's probably a good idea to turn it off entirely. Apparently when the Kindle is only 'sleeping' it is still polling regularly, and thus using (a minuscule amount of) power.
