The other reason to eliminate a physical keyboard is to offer a device that is internationalized. The A-Z keyboard pretty much ties Kindle to English speaking markets at present.

That's one of the very nice things about that IR technology Sony (and now Kobo and B&N) uses. It doesn't add anything to the screen. So, the screen looks exactly the same turned on as turned off. No extra layers of glass or any other material. If I compare the Pearl screen from Sony to the Pearl screen of the K3, there is absolutely zero difference. On and off.

I don't care for touch at all. As long as they still provided buttons for page turns, which I'd think they would, I'm not fussed at all. I only have about twenty books on my Kindle and I don't think I've ever looked up a word while reading so I'm perfectly happy with the buttons and the 4-way controller.

You do get a lot of value for Kobo in Canada, and their store is great for those who like to read Canadian content as well. |

FWIW, I LOVE the screen on the 650. The whole thing is just gorgeous, but the screen has great clarity, and I'm getting used to the touch. I didn't used to like to touch my electronics at all, but after using the kindle app on my (touchable) droid x, I found a touch screen to be a plus. I love being able to look up words, highlight, whatever. I just wish it would allow for a tap to change the page like the kindle app does. Spoiler:

You can keep your touch screens, please. Buttons may not be cute, but then neither is a touch screen that's actually been used. Buddy handed me his iPad2 yesterday to show me something. YECH! The screen was filthy--finger marks all over it. No way I could stand that on my reader.

There are no fingerprints at all on my 350, last cleaned... oh, probably a couple of months ago. The screen is kind of matte, so does nät show of fingerprints easy. And you don't actually have to touch the screen. Really! "Touch" is actually incorrect. You need to be extremely close to the screen, but you can get action without touching it. And if your finger is messy (like when I eat donuts and read at the same time) a Q-tip works just as well, or maybe vn better than your finger. I do agree that a good device has both touch adn buttons for page turning, to give the user flexibility. |

I agree Asawi..the IR touch screen is wonderful! Never thought I would go with a touch screen because of the fingerprints, but my Sony 650 with IR screen has definitely changed all that. Looking forward to seeing more devices using this "touch" screen. The new Kindle maybe?

A touch screen would also require a stronger processor I guess, which is good. Because it has to refresh the screen at a higher speed especially when reading pdf files dragging them all over.
I really hope they add more fonts with different darkness settings this time which saves us from hacking the device and try to add our own fonts etc. |

Them keeping a few buttons for menu/back/home and a trackpad for navigation below the screen would be quite nice too as it would just increase the flexibility without actually increasing the size of the device as there would be a bezel there anyway. Last edited by Crowl; 06-03-2011 at 05:47 AM. |

I don't like touch screens. I am afraid if I had a touch-screen Kindle I would always be producing results I wasn't looking for with casual touches. Its bad enough with the Kindle page-turn buttons, which I sometimes hit by mistake when shifting around in bed.
And I don't entirely believe the stuff about lack of fingerprints. My K3 has a pearl screen and I have often to clean off marks on it. It's not as bad as my SIL's iPhone, but nonetheless quite quickly looks less than pristine. |

DMB, play with a Sony. Simple touches give a tiny error icon at the bottom of the page. You have to actually swipe, double-tap, or swipe-and-hold to accomplish anything. I do think it might be useful to have a tap-to-turn page option (as Stanza works on the iPhone). I want to try it anyway.
