![]() I can think of lots of reasons for why people single-source their books from B&N (as well as other places): 1. Familiarity. You get used to buying from a certain source. If you're in the habit of stripping DRM or downloading a copy locally for storage or keeping everything just so in Calibre, it's easier to get into a routine with a single-source website rather than remembering all the steps for the 50,000 different providers out there. 2. Inertia. Once you have a lot of books stored up at a specific online library, you like to keep everything bulked up there, even if you use a completely different source to access your library. I LIKE having most of my books from a single source, because if my Calibre2opds method ever breaks down (god forbid), I can then access all my books from a single app (Nook) than a dozen (Nook, Kobo, Kindle, Sony, etc.). 3. Site interface. I really like the B&N library interface so much right now. Books can be sorted by a number of methods (including by Samples, Magazines, and Newspapers) and you can archive things easily. It's very conducive for large libraries (although it could be more so with some real online shelving options a la GoodReads). For me, personally, the online library managements at Kindle and Kobo don't compare. THIS IS A SUBJECTIVE STATEMENT. ![]() 4. Discounts. My B&N credit card gets me 3% off all ebook purchases. Take that, Agency pricing. ![]() I've been a loyal Amazon customer for years, but I never quite bought a Kindle even though I was tempted many times. When the Nook came out, I bought it immediately because I liked the fact that I could easily change my device later and my epubs would still work on the new device. (I didn't know about Calibre conversion at the time.) With the new Kobo and new Nook coming out, I'll probably stick with the new Nook (assuming we see a Christmas price drop) just because I've MENTALLY locked myself into their store. Brand loyalty is an interesting thing - I'll hate on B&N the company all day long (THIS IS A SUBJECTIVE STATEMENT.) for various mis-steps, but I still keep buying from their store. ![]() |

I buy just about all my ebooks from B&N. However, occasionally another seller will have exclusives. For example, Amazon has small ebooks called Kindle Singles that I think are exclusive. They had one called "Why They Fought: The Real Reason for the Civil War" that I really wanted, so that's what prompted me to buy a Kindle ebook (using Kindle for PC).

i disagree with you. the person's post was very valid. i'm also amazed how much corporations were able to affect consumers' thinking that the consumer is willing to put a leash on and points out what is illegal and what's not without any legal precent, legal actions on behalf of parties who are affected or lack of cease and decease actions. and it all happens at unprecedented rate, new technology emerges and suddenly ton of new things are illegal or violate licence as perceived by certain "savvy" consumers. my antidote for this is too look back couple years at comparable situations and see if the claim is valid by comapring if it was valid them. if we continue to go that path couple years from now installing non brand floor mats or wipers in cars will be illegal, repairing tvs in nonauthorized service center will be illegal etc. good thing that we still can write and install amateur software for PCs, obviously doing the same for computers which are miniaturized and encapsulated into small packaging (although having exact same components) is already a no no. i keep imaging that scriptorium in book/movie name of the rose where books were copied for preservation for coming generations and imaging how it would be called a pirate shop today and wouldnt last a day. things like hepatitis c is already privately owned. couple of years more like that and will be paying settlement fees for perceived patent/trademark/copyright violations along with our tax returns

![]() I do wish someone would come up with a good way to transfer all my Kindle books, Nook books, and Kobo books to a centralized source that ALL the stores can feed into and access from, BUT THERE I GO WITH MY DREAMY LITTLE DREAMS. ![]() (Obviously I mean besides my Calibre2opds + Dropbox that I currently use... and that the nook app and kindle app and kobo app refuse to access.) |

Wow, I made my most recent post (about usually buying from B&N) not having read all the posts above it or realizing that a flame war had broken out. Well, gee. All I can say is that I have never said anything bad about Amazon. I buy A LOT of stuff from Amazon.
The only reason I try to buy my books from B&N is because I bought a Nook and I want B&N to be healthy and stay in business. So I try to buy from them for this mostly selfish reason. As far as rooting and Android, I have nothing at all against them. I'm just too damn lazy to root my Color Nook, and I like it well enough as is, period. Last edited by RAH; 05-24-2011 at 01:50 PM. |

It doesn't matter which nook.
![]() The answer is "Not without modification of either the Kindle book (i.e., DRM stripping and conversion to epub) or of the Nook device (i.e., rooting and slapping a Kindle app onto it)." I don't think the OP implied he wanted to get that complicated. ![]() |

I rooted my Nook Color ONLY to be able to install the Kindle ap and be able to buy from Amazon.. and transfer my Kindle books to Nook Color for night reading. I never use by NC as a tablet for anything other than reading or listening to audio books. I"m very happy with it...

Jo...for your sake and ours...get a life!!! You claim to be independent...but it seems to me, that a paid employee of a competitor might earn their pay by doing precisely what you do. If I am mistaken, maybe you should approach one of them and ask for a job. Either way, why not just leave the people who enjoy their Nooks alone. |

I can't understand why the existence of dozens of popular non-DRM sources are so threatening to them that they have to repeatedly try to convince everyone that 3 or 4 DRM sources represent the entire world. Last edited by ApK; 05-28-2011 at 10:38 AM. |

My personal opinion is that the Nook is a much better eReader, but Amazon has a better book store. The Amazon store sample books contain much more text than the B&N and Amazon allows book returns for 7 days. The Nook store samples are sometimes so short that there is not enough text to determine if the book is worth reading and there are no returns. True, you can sample the book for an hour if you live near a B&N store, but only if you live near one. But the Nook Color has a larger screen, more functionality and is very nice to hold and use. In my opinion, it is much nicer than any of the Kindles. I read history books and need a larger screen for some of the maps and tables and cannot imagine trying to read a display map on the very small Kindle screens. If I could find a really good 3rd party eReader that satisfied all of my needs (light, thin and comfortable enough to hold, color screen, both portrait and landscape modes and the ability to properly display Eastern European fonts I would buy that and forget about both the Kindle and the Nook. But since I can't find anything that completely fits my needs I end up using both the iPad (yes, the iPad which, although too large and heavy to be easily useful is a decent eReader if you are not walking around carrying the reader with you) or the Nook Color if you are walking around with the device. I thought the new black-and-white Nook might suit my needs, but there is no landscape mode. |
