I don't know about FBReader, but the "portable" MobiPocket Reader that the iLiad (and CyBook???) use is Java-based, and unfortunately the Reader doesn't have a Java JVM. It would, therefore, be extremely difficult to port it.

If the Sony Reader takes off, Mobi might be motivated to do their own port. Does Sony actually offer an SDK or any developer assistance for the platform? ______ Dennis |

I don't buy DRM ebooks. Not worth the hassle to me.

I understand the point of view that there are more books out there worth reading than anyone would ever have time to read... it just doesn't work with the way I choose and read books. I have favorite authors and I tend to really want to read the next book by those authors, regardless of what else is out there. Some are available as legal ebooks, or non-DRM (or DRM-removable) ebooks, some are not. Most are not Baen books. I'm really hoping the Baen-Tor deal changes the digital availability of the books I want to read.

Except for books of exceptional interest to me I buy un-DRMed ebooks or DRMed ones that I can convert. (Note - exceptional interest sometimes includes pBooks.) However I find that I have a strong tendency to buy new books of casual interest as un-DRMed rather than another book of equal price & (otherwise) value that is DRMed. Therefore the authors/publishers that DRM their ebooks are losing sells

To answer your original question, if my Sony dies, the company goes bankrupt, and none of my files are available to me any more, I think it will have been a terrific investment even if I only get two or three years useful life out of it. And I would probably be looking for the best possible replacement and start over, if I had to. It's just that good for me. Most of my costs have been the reader purchase, not in content (since there ain't hardly any for sale). That's way different than the ipods my daughters have. They pay (proportionate to the hardware) lots for new music and they want to listen it for years to come. Replace "Sony" above with "Apple" and I think they'd be hurting - and broke trying to replace it all.

I'm like a lot of people here, in that I try to avoid buying DRM content. I've only bought a few DRM'ed books, and when there was a choice, I stripped the DRM out. In a very few cases, I didn't know of any DRM-removal software for the e-books I bought, so I weighed that against the likelihood that I wouldn't be able to read it sometime in the future.
In those cases, I accepted the potential future loss of the book, and bought it anyway. I figured that, if it turned out to be that good, and I wanted it in the future but couldn't access the e-book, I'd just re-purchase it. (So far, the books I've read that way were not so good that I plan to repurchase them when I can't read them.) |
