Sony is definitely non-existent when it comes to advertising on American TV. It's definitely one of the reasons why more Americans are familiar with the Kindle and to a lesser extent, the Nook even though they both came out after Sony.

I don't understand why Sony doesn't advertise it's e-readers in TV commercials. Amazon advertises the Kindle, B&N the Nook. Even Apple advertises both the iPad and iPhone as e-readers (in addition to other things) in their numerous commercials.

I like both of those commercials, as well as the new B&N commercial. I saw it a couple of days ago and still have, "By hook or by crook, by book or by Nook" stuck in my head, so it was obviously effective (especially since I generally only remember a catchy song or image and rarely ever remember what a particular commercial was selling).

I like the somewhat tongue-in-cheek nature of that ad - Kinda like it's poking some fun at the Mac/PC ads.

I wonder if we'll ever see a commercial series featuring "Hi, I'm a Kindle/I'm a Nook" type characters. THAT would be kinda fun to see.

The first commercial doesn't really tell me why I should get a Kindle instead of a book, does it? OK, I can read it like a book in the sunshine and I can mark a page as I can do in a book, so why should I spend > $ 100 to get it?

Because the Kindle can come preloaded with nicely formatted copies of the public domain, if Amazon so wishes.

It's going after a specific sticking point for some potential buyers. Those potential buyers already know what a Kindle is (or at least have an idea), they just may not be sure if it can adequately provide a reading experience they will enjoy. Amazon knows there are enough people in the "I like real books" camp for it to be worth making a commercial targeting their concerns.

Plus, others may see it and be interested enough to look for more info even if they don't fall into that particular target group.

Sony Reader commercial
Wow, I have never seen that commercial before. I wonder how widely played it is/was in the US. I also noticed how different the feel was (especially music-wise) between this commercial and the second Kindle one. The Sony commercial seemed more geared towards an older, calmer audience while the Kindle seemed more "hip" and geared for an active, younger audience. Both offered good information. I think my impression (from these commercials) is that Kindle is "cool" and Sony ... not so much. Sony must be "your parent's reader." Of course, Sony gets my vote every time, anyway...

Yes! I know that ereaders aren't Sony's big money-maker or anything, but I just think they could do some targeted advertising and turn this into more of a money-maker. After all, I can't provide the sole advertising for Sony via word of mouth!

Nah! Just many many takes and lots of editing to edit out the bits where the Kindles were smashed to bits.

My first thought when I saw this commercial was -Don't fold over a page! You're damaging the book!!

When I first got my ereader and told people, no one seemed able to differentiate between a nook and a Kindle so I understand why Amazon is trying to build brand recognition. The ad people mention most to me is the one where a girl is on the beach reading her Kindle in the sun. They want to know if that is possible.

Where are the Sony ads for their products?

I have the exact opposite issue. Whenever I read with my PocketBook somewhere in public (at the airport, say), people come up to me and ask "is that a Kindle?"

Depending on what mood you're in, I find you can get amusing results by replying, "What's a Kindle? Isn't that a sort of chocolate thing with a toy inside?" or "Oh, trying to jump on the bandwagon are they?" Otherwise you can be nice and explain and enthuse...

I'm going to sound like a politician and say I agree with most of the contents made about the commercial, but I will add this.

Amazon is trying to debunk most of the absurd arguments made by folks that only read 'real' books, but the commercial came out too strong. I think they will out off far more people than they convert because of it.
