PRS-650 Anyone concerned about the Sony breaches?

I'll also add that there's no breach for the Reader Store yet. Or that Sony has released info about. From the start of the breaches they haven't exactly been forthcoming with all information. Security is still being breached to the point that I doubt I'll renew my EQ subscription when it's up later this year (I'm on a yearly plan).

While I was on the fence about whether or not I should call my bank and cancel my debit card they had on file, my bank made the decision for me and all other customers who ever made a payment to SOE or PSN networks and issued new cards to those people, even though Sony claimed that no banking info for the US was stolen. My bank decided not to trust that info exactly as I was worried about. Luckily I was only at a self-service small post office station when I found out my card was denied for a $5.90 charge... that would have been embarrassing to have happen in a line at a store.

So it gets down to how safe you think any of their databases are at this point, including their Reader Store.

I wouldn't recommend geting that worried about breaches of security for a Sony electronic reader. I do not know what personal information that your reader collects but its not really a problem seeing as how there has not been any major hacks for electronic book readers as yet. In other words there is no sense in worrying about the store when no one is attempting to get in. I would recommend that you read IT security news sources and look for Sony PRS hacks.

I think the fact that first it was their PS3 network, and now their online music store to get hacked makes it pretty relevant to another of Sony's online services. So I don't see the point of your post.

But it has nothing to do with the reader when Sony is getting hacked through SQL injections, remote shell access, etc, that target Linux, MySQL/Oracle, and whatever else Sony runs on the back-end.

I'm concerned because the credit card that I had attached to the Sony reader store just got hijacked by ID thieves: they got my birthdate and mother's maiden name and swapped the account's phone and mailing address and ordered a new card (to be shipped to the new address by overnight express -- they did this over the phone, not online, too).

Luckily, it got flagged for security and in combination with me unsuspectingly using my credit card the next day, the credit card company locked my account. I'm not sure whether it was due to the Sony breach, but nothing else seems affected (so far... knock on wood). But the fact that they had my security information makes me think that some account attached to this credit card got compromised. Not sure it it was Sony, but I'm very, very concerned... and I've heard rumors that Sony is keeping under wraps how much was really compromised. It could be coincidence, but this is the first time I've experienced credit card fraud where they used the security information like this (which is in almost any user account). Let's just say that I'm going to be pretty inventive with any "mother's maiden name" from here on out.

So... I'd suggest keeping a close eye on any attached credit cards for a while. Hopefully nothing happens to yours, but it's a pain to deal with if they do anything.

On a side note: why could anybody change their address and then overnight express a new credit card to that address? Wouldn't you contact the old information in the account to verify? That just screams ID thief to me... grumble...

And another branch of Sony's online network was hacked last week. At this rate they just might make their way to the Reader Store too even though it is a relatively small part of Sony. Nothing seems safe from the hackers' wrath toward Sony at this point.
