the thing is, Sony didn't do things properly.
Reports I've seen from people who poked around at the PSN before hand, and various articles, Sony was woefully lacking in the security area. |

I used the term inaccurately. I was at Bell Labs in the old days (same time frame as Clifford Stoll's The Cuckoo's Egg). I'm sure things have "progressed" since then.
