I pick my books mostly from recommendations from other people on forums like this, and I subscribe to Red Adept reviews. Usually if she gives it 5 stars, I'll give it a try. I trust a recommendation from another avid reader more than something from the newspaper or something like that.

That's what I do as well. More often than not I find a book that's free (at that time)through the forums and buy a copy for reading later. I also have a large # of books from the mobileread uploads on a DVD so I have plenty of good PD books with working TOC's to read at will.
