People have been taking pictures of their kids taking a bath for years, yet in recent history those people are getting labeled as pedophiles and child pornographers. It seems that people are unable to separate nudity from sex anymore, especially in the US and western countries it influences.

While I don't read or find manga interesting, I believe the threat of censoring it is greater than any of the content between the covers. The same goes for all art, music, and literature. The 80's had satanic panic, but the songs weren't slaying real virgins. If you read any Marquis de Sade it doesn't mean the deeds are getting carried out. If you ring a bell, an angel isn't really getting wings.

For anyone that wishes for anything else that really matters to go uncensored, the censorship of ideas and expression should be frightening.

The west has done its fair share of sexualising pre-teen girls too — S-Club Juniors, padded bras for 10 year olds, and the like. The magazines aimed at them are quite sexually explicit too.

And just about any TV show with a teen female character finds excuses to occasionally slut them up, often with the thin excuse of playing for laughs with the parent's reactions, or for Halloween. A recent example of both. PSFW (Probably Safe For Work.) And a page I saw at a blog I ran across earlier today. MLSFWBSNABD (Moderately Less Safe For Work But Still Not A Big Deal)

I have to admit, a good few categories of Manga art are rather beyond the pale for most Western sensibilities. Do we need to accept Westerners have a right to consume these images if they are generally thought to be offensive to our culture, but are okay in the eyes of Japanese culture? My personal view is that they're pretty grim, and I think of myself as being fairly liberal-minded.

I'm a Westerner. I'd like to have the right to consume just about any image, lol. I'm also a fan of manga but dating back more to the Lone Wolf and Cub series than the porn-ish stuff.
