Not to try to tell you what to think or anything, but just to throw this out there -- the last firmware update to the Reader didn't touch the hacks. And they've hinted various times & places that they don't object to hacking on the Reader that doesn't aim at DRM circumvention.
![]() Remember, the Reader is handled by a different division than the PSP. ![]() |

Their very first firmware upgrade actually prevented access to most of the filesystem via USB. Thankfully they didn't completely block access and igorsk had to find the workaround of loading executables on an SD card. Not a very confidence inspiring precedent.

Yeah, it did, but the second one didn't go any further down that path, so who can say what they were up to on the first one? That's all I'm saying.

505 has pseudo collections for external memory, how soon will this come to the 500?

Yep. It's tough to say how much effort (read "money") they have to put into porting the firmware. If they've done a significant rewrite of the code for the 505 the "port" could actually be a "here's the spec sheet, start coding" development effort for the 500.
They could probably do it, but I'm sure they're looking at how much it costs and what's the payback, just like any business. Here's hoping. I'd certainly like to see the new book organization interface and collections on the external card. Regards, Bob |

Hi - newbie here. My boss has all his books on one large (2-4 Gb) card and has advised me to get little ones and catagorize. Sounds good to me (I'm a catalog librarian
![]() If I pop in different memory cards - does the reader not read them? Do I have to do something with my Connect first? (I will be getting a Sony PRS 500). Also, I have heard not all memory cards work with this model - did I hear wrong? Thanks for all the help! |

Hey, MissLissa, the 500 takes Memory Sticks and SD cards (up to 2 GB). Since the 500 doesn't allow for collections on cards presently, I'd agree that the "small cards" approach is probably best if you're going the card route.
There is a thread around here somewhere that discusses what brands of cards do and don't work with the 500, I don't know if it'll hold for the 505, but I'd expect it to be similar. If you just put your books on a card and pop it into the Reader it'll find them right enough. It will also go through the entire contents of the card looking for files it recognizes, so that's another plus for smaller cards. ![]() The bottom line is that you don't have to use Connect if you'd prefer not to for whatever reason. |

now the new library software, 2.0.0007200 finally supports creating collections on external cards, until sony comes up with their firmware update or can hacks be made to have the current collection code to scan/load from the external card?
