What does the installer do? It installs the application. The package is, I believe, built in "Python", and the installer installs all the "system" files that it uses in the appropriate locations.

Absolutely nothing wrong with command-line tools; for tasks like converting files they are much better than GUI apps in many respects, and the fact that they are command-line makes them "cross-platform" - the same tools can be built for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, etc. You can't do that with GUI applications.

The GUI app that there's the screen shot of on the web site is, as Jon mentioned, simply a tool for transferring files to and from the Reader; it's separate from the "conversion" parts of it.

Certainly not "crap", as you so colourfully describe it.

Well, regardless, it may have installed the program, but it put an icon on my desktop for it and it does not do anything at all. If it is all command line, what is the icon for? If it is for transferring files to my Reader, then it does not work as it does not come up when I run it.

The person to ask is Kovid, the author. He's more than happy to answer questions about it.

I just tested the GUI it works fine. If it doesn't work for you then you're doing something wrong and given your attitude I am not inclined to help you.

It seems ridiculous to come to a forum, ask questions that were already answered in other posts (or in google), get help, then call other people's work "a crap".

I myself am a new user here and appreciate all the hard work few developers have done to give us these tools.

Well, I appologize for my attitude. However, if you would notice, I started this thread being very polite, but to be told that I am doing something wrong when all I did was double-click the mouse, is a bit ridiculous. I am generally a very easy going person, I really try to be nice here, but it seems that all I am getting is attacked.

The reason the GUI for libprs does not work is that you cannot use it to transfer files to/from your reader as long as you have the USB driver for Connect (the software) installed. That makes it two different USB drivers for the reader and the Connect seems to take priority. If you were to uninstall Connect or just the USB driver for Connect, then you could use the GUI for Libprs500.

Yes, it does work. But it's because of the way Windows works that you cannot have both. And the reason Libprs500 is not using the USB driver from Connect is so it can be kept cross platform compatible and also work on Linux and OS X where there is no Connect.

As for crap, if command line programs were crap, we would not have computers today as everything once upon a time used to be command line.

Kids today really need a good lesson on Command Line etiquette. Those of use that had DOS before Windows are much better off now then those who just jumped in with Windows.

You know, I never said that command line programs were crap. Re-read my post. I have been around the computer industry since the release of my IBM XT 8088. I am quite fluent with command line programs. I was looking for something alot simpler to deal with and was hoping for a GUI. Since that is not possible, I will just go and find another program. Sheesh!

I have to say that you very well may not find something easier. Book Designer is not always easier. The book I posted about Shakespeare I could not have formatted in Book Designer not without a LOT of work. Granted the format is not perfect. But it's pretty darn good given the original HTML. And all I used was one simple command using html2lrf. I gave it the options, the name of the HTML file and voila, a book was born in LRF.

Good luck finding something that will always be easier. As far as I'm concerned, the right tool for the job. Book Designer and libprs500 both have their uses. and I use the right tool for the job at hand. I feel sorry for you that you will not use libprs500 because you got confused and didn't understand and even after we told you what's what you still got pissed because the GUI you saw was not what you expected.

Feel better now?

I did not get pissed because it did not do what I wanted. I got pissed because of the attitudes of people in this thread. It is one thing to explain to me why it does not work, it is quite another to say it is all my fault and I must be doing something wrong.

I got a response from the people on the GUI site. They said they do not support the GUI anymore as it is very old and it does not work. This means that even if I had not misunderstood, it would not have worked anyway.

If I wanted a command line solution to my problems, I would not have had to post a message at all, it was obvious which program to choose. I was looking for a simple program with a Windows interface. This is obviously not the correct program for me.
