There is more rural area with less roads in Alaska most likely as well so being able to download an ebook is no doubt a great time saver as well. And some areas are pretty closed in. I mean the state capital can only be reached by boat or plane for example, which means that most things cost more since they have to be either flown in or shipped in via ship.

Nope, DC.
By every measure he tried.
Lots of explanations are possible: some funny, some sad, all plausible.
There are lots of reasons why the data shouldn't be representative of the US ebook market but looking at the general trends it very likely is.
Virginia near the top and DC dead last is *exactly* what general socio-cultural data would predict. (Hint: Alexandria vs Anacostia)

Such an interesting dichotomy.

As far as D.C. being the lowest consumer it might be a matter of how busy they are there or maybe (from the passing of some laws etc) we could infer that our nation's leaders are illiterate to some degree. Certainly it would explain some of the bone headed decisions that have been made in the past.

There is D.C. our government, and D.C. the residents. Our governors aren't living in D.C. by any means; they are living in Virginia and Maryland. D.C. is most likely the lowest because there are so many impoverished areas near our capital.

Since B&N separates by state I wonder if they could be persuaded to list all their sales by individual states.

Or ask another publisher to provide a similar list using B&N's data. Perhaps, Neil of Bewrite has noticed a similar trend.

The thing about Virginia is that most of the people that do well there do VERY well and live in close proximity to each other. The population that isn't so well off, are spread out mostly in the western part of the state. Are you thinking of W. Virgina perhaps? I'm thinking of areas surrounding Alexandria, Arlington Co. and similar. If you have ever driven through VA on 95 during rush hour, you become well aware of how well off it is. Unfortunately, every time I have driven through it from NJ, I seem to time it perfectly so that I hit rush hour and taken on an addition 2.5 hours. Seems like I just wouldn't learn.
as I said, I LIVED in Virginia. the corridor along I95, sure, but go west... completely different world

I think part of it may be that where there is money in D.C., it is very young pretty money. I was in D.C. last spring for a funeral. my son gave me the TOUR, and it is totally a young persons party town. families move into Maryland and Virginia leaving the poor and disenfranchised behind. odd representation for our Nation's Capital

Yes, as I said I've been visiting Virginia, on a regular basis, for my entire life.
I also stated that most of the money is on the east, aka I-95. It sounds like you're agreeing w/me that the majority of the affluent live on the eastern part of Virginia, but are arguing with me instead. How come? Or am I mistaken?
