Depends on platform, setup and what you run... I have on three different computers and also installed on at least half a dozen others over the last couple of years and not had a single crash... although I'd admit to not using it for html files, badly formatted or otherwise, I'm lazy and use Dreamweaver et al...

One would think that since the core support for OpenOffice comes from the Nix Geek community, that it would run better under Ubuntu, but that has NOT been my experience. OO 3 under Ubuntu seems to crash much more frequently than I remember OO 2 crashing under Windows. Sure, comparing version 2 to version 3 is a little apples-to-oranges, but I would expect OO3 to be more stable, not less so. And as I said before, so far at least, I haven't found LibreOffice to be much better (things that would crash OO3 also seem to crash LO3), but one of the reasons I find listed for the OpenOffice/LibreOffice split was to increase the pace of bug fix and feature releases, so hope springs eternal . . . ![]() Sorry to drift a little off topic. |

I'll drift us further by saying that all I need is to open the occasional Word/Excel file on my netbook, where I cannot install Office as I don't have an external disc drive. Open Office has been okay so far.

I have a vintage copy of Office 2000 that came with one of my older laptops, and unlike you, I do have an external USB DVD drive, so installing Office is no problem . . . Or at least it wouldn't be a problem, were it not for a pile of artificial 'incompatibilities' that Microsoft has intentionally created, between this older version and both Win7 and documents created by more modern versions of MS Office. I have found lots of cases where the Microsoft document compatibility in OpenOffice is actually better than my vintage MS Office2000. Microsoft thinks they are being Sooooo clever, doing things to intentionally screw up backward compatibility, and then using this to try to blackmail consumers to upgrade. Pay us 300 dollars for an upgrade, or we'll shoot this dog! (or at least let it chew your documents to bits!), but like a lot of other users, I decide not to put up with this garbage, so all they succeeding in doing was driving me into the OpenOffice/LibreOffice camp. Unfortunately (for Microsoft), when folks try the free open source version of OpenOffice or LibreOffice, most will find that it is not just a good 'last ditch alternative' to Office, but actually works quite well and will do pretty much everything they need. I still like the grammar checker in MS Word a little better than anything I have found as a plugin for OpenOffice. I also like the fact that on a modern fast CPU Word 2000 will open in under a second, which is great, but with Microsoft playing the kinds of stupid games I have run into, I find myself booting up MS Word less and less often. |

You should be aware that ,though PDF export is a built in function, PDF import currently requires a special plugin in OpenOffice. Also, don't expect to be able to seamlessly import very complex commercial level PDF's (like some of your academic reference books) for editing, as the PDF import plugin is still in it's first release and currently supports only fairly simple PDF formatting. PDF export, on the other hand, in both OpenOffice and LibreOffice, is very sophisticated, and can handle very complex documents, including full support for hyper-links, indexes, and full TOC support. So if you are looking for a very professional tool to author academic papers that you wish to submit for review or publish in PDF format, you can't go wrong with LibreOffice. ![]() |
