Hmm... interesting.

When I used Firefox (and it's a few versions old), my purchase was interrupted by the site telling me I did not have MSReader, or that it needed to be activated (neither of which was true). When I went to the download or reactivation page, I was instructed that I had to use IE or one of 4 versions of Netscape. I stopped there, instead of reloading MSReader, and plugged the book URL into IE instead.

There, I was able to finish the purchase process without being told I needed to do anything with MSReader. I was taken to download, and although the first attempt did not actually take, the second try did. As I had MSReader already open, the book appeared in the index immediately, and opened just fine.

So I took some advice from this thread and the book I got today I bought retail at Border's.

On another note, I was referred to a book by a coworker which I had seen on Connect (Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything) and while I was buying that, I noticed that Connect had several new books by some of my favorite authors. (J.V Jones and David Feintuch, to be specific) I ended up buying a couple of those books as well, which I already have in paperback form. And now that I think of it, probably 50% of my purchases on Connect have been for books I already own. Go figure.

I know how that goes. Several of the books I've bought from Connect are rereads. Usually, it's something I read a while ago and no longer have the paper book. Some of them, though, are books that I read as an ARC and liked enough to want to support.

As an aside, I wish Sony would cut a deal with the likes of Dell Magazines, etc. I've taken to reading Asimov's, Analog, and F&SF in the Fictionwise electronic editions (thanks to someone on this forum). They're OK, but a Reader-formatted version would be utterly sweet.

If Sony could negotiate a contract for these magazines, I would subscribe to F&SF REAL FAST!.

That would be nice, wouldn't it, for those here who would like to subscribe to a dedicated Bbeb subscription.

Once Gordon Van Gelder has had a chance to recuperate some (bypass surgery), we should start hounding the F&SF message board for it.

The digital vs. paper version question came up on the Asimov's board recently, which has more writers than readers on it, and most of the respondents seemed to prefer paper. Odd, but true.

Shouldn't be surprised... even in SF, quite a bit of the publishers' and writers' old guard (not just J. K. Rowling) does not yet get or trust e-books. But I agree, now's the time to start petitioning for e-book access, and give them good reasons to do so. You might even subscribe anyway, if you are not already a subscriber, just to make them see you're serious about your interest.

(Of course, if they insist they will never publish e-books, I guess you could cancel your subscription to show them again how serious you are.)

In my case, it would be an empty threat. I just don't think I could go through with it.

That's okay... if you can't just go cold turkey if they won't agree to your request, don't bother to threaten them with it. Just ask nicely, and make sure they understand how important it is to you and others, and how much better you'd feel about them if they did make the switch.

You can always offer them a carrot, instead of a stick: Suggest that you might pay a higher subscription for it.

I've been downloading the large-print PDFs. They're quite readable and lot less work.

Maybe not. If you like the output from lit2lrf then it's as much work as typing in the command line to do the conversion.

Yeah, I may have overstated it with "a lot." I'm just lazy.

How do they look after conversion? Is there much cleanup work to be done?
