I haven't followed all of the ins and outs of MrsJoseph's story, but have you tried a 'hard reset'? Menu > Settings > Advanced > Reset Device Now

My Kobo was locked up and it got it back into a workable state. (I use Calibre exclusively for loading my books.)

I tried it. It worked but the update still doesn't (I'm not trying again, it's hell thumbing through books looking for your place )

This is what Kobo says about the firmware upgrade:

m-Amber W, Mar-23 15:05 (EDT):
Hello Douglas,
Thank you for contacting Kobo customer care. I understand that you are trying to update your wifi eReader. I apologize for the miscommunication, however the upgrade is only available to a random 5% of our customers, at this time is not yet available publicly. When it becomes available to you, because you have the wifi model, your reader will prompt you to upgrade, if you ignore the prompt you will have to upgrade through the computer at that time. You can still use the desktop the same even though it is at v.1.9, the desktop will sync with lower version of eReaders. Again I greatly apologize for the miscommunication with this matter. Have a wonderful day.
Sincerely,
Amber
The Kobo Team

Just thought I'd report in on the low-battery behaviour. You still get a "warning" screen telling you that the battery is low - as before, you cannot move past this screen until you plug-in the device. I think the wording of the message has changed though - it oddly said that I needed to plug-in my device and then not turn it on for 15 minutes, after that I would be able to continue to read. But as soon as you plug it in, the device starts itself, so I don't know what the 15 minutes is about.

Anyways, the best news is - when I opened my book, I was exactly where I was when the warning came up! I hope this is a permanent behaviour and not a one-off!

To be fair to kobo I regularly keep track of this stuff and have not seen an official posts suggesting that 1.9 if available yet.

Interesting that 5% of us got it.

I had applied to be a beta tester adn although I was never asked i wonder if those that expressed an intrest were the first to get the update. Just speculation and thinking out lound on my part so don't take it as truth.

It is mentioned on their Help page under What's New: http://kobo.zendesk.com/entries/4860...ac-get-updates

But it does specify the 5%

I had never applied to be a beta tester but got the update.
The update I think caused more problems especially with SD cards and sideloading library books with ADE or books with Calibre.

It was announced the day the V1.9 update became available in the customer care section.

See here.

I got both the desktop and eReader update the next day.

Its odd how it responds differently with the same hardware. I have the update all of my books except the preloaded ones are on sd card, I side load with calibre mostly but have one or two kepubs from the kobo site, and I have had no issues with the update at all??

Nope. I applied to be a beta tester. I was also an early adopter (pre-ordered it when it was first announced) and we're now a four-Kobo family. No update here.

I kind of took it as there was approx a 5% chance of getting it at any given time rather than only a hard capped 5% total of people getting it. If it was a total 5% logically anyone getting it wouldn't have had to do multiple sync's to get it.

Did multiple syncs last night and got the 1.9, none of the known issues happening with my unit. Not only that, but it didn't do the usual back to factory settings thing that previous updates have done- in other words, I didn't have to reload my sideloaded books. Synced with Kobo desktop and put another book in with Calibre, and no trouble whatsoever.

Just click Update Library on the desktop app over and over until the dekstop update hits. Once that's done cable up your kobo to the new desktop app (yes, cable up your wifi kobo) and click Sync over and over until the update hits. You'll get both eventually if you're persistent.
