It’s way too wimpy to do what I need, which is take handwritten notes->*.pdf in meetings, then email them to my work account. I still haven’t found a really good solution for that, but a LiveScribe smart pen comes close.

That being said, the Asus slate works well as a reader, but any netbook would do the same, more quickly and for $150 less. And my Galaxy Tab does it better; but alas, no note taking ability.

I have been watching the Asus Eee-note, supposedly coming to the US for under $200. That one might work for me, we’ll see.
Yup, I'd stay away from those Atom processors --- feels like a motorcycle engine driving an 18 wheeler. Just for note taking anything works, I guess. As far as netbooks or regular laptops are concerned, I just don't feel comfortable for non-work related reading, the screen is too far away from my eyes and can never be tilted far enough back to get a good position. Besides, netbooks do have really lousy screens, nothing I would want to read books or magazines on, or watch video on. You have to look straight at them to see anything, the colors don't look nice, and the resolution is very low. But obviously, if cost is important to you, then they are a solid choice.

That being said, using a pen for capacitive screens on the Galaxy TAB doesn't work for taking notes? Not accurate enough? Obviously there won't be handwriting recognition, but you could store the files as ink.

Actually it's palm rejection that is the issue. It's rather cumbersome to write without resting my hand on the screen, resulting in lots of extraneous junk in the file. There is a thread about it over in XDA-Developers, but nothing useful yet. I keep hoping that someone somewhere (besides Asus and Wacom) will realize that there is a market for pen based note taking.

Does that mean that devices that don't have 3G (Rooted Nook Colors or WiFi only Xooms and SGTs) won't have access to AAS?

You have to enter EITHER your phone number (for a text message?) or your email address (of your device/gmail account). I used my gmail account and the message showed up on both my droidx and my xoom. I then downloaded the AppStore App and them downloaded Angry birds.

Yes, that's what they said over a XDA, actually the topic was about porting HTC's app to the SGT. No ]joy yet though.

I had no problem using the app and downloading a free app on a rooted NOOKcolor. I wasn't prompted for a phone number. I just logged in with my Amazon email address and password.

You can also enter your phone's email address. I have gmail on my phone and my Tab and used the email address to get the link to the Amazon app store.
