The OP was incorrect. They did not announce back then that they were closing 75, just that Borders was considering it.

Looks like they have now decided on the next round of cuts. 28 superstores. I could not find a list of them, however. And Borders has to pay for all orders COD

edit: Nate at the digital reader has the list of new closings

Ouch, I took a look at that map, and with Borders closed we're going to be left with one BAM as the only bookstore in about 30 miles. There's another BAM right about 30 miles away and no non-closing Borders (or B&N) until you hit about 40 miles or more.

For me, the big thing was that B&N refused to stop trying to hard-sell me their "registered customer" card even when I said "no, and if you say another word about the cards I'm walking out." (the clerk in that case replied "but it's a good deal, you should buy..." and I don't know what she said after that, because I left my books on the counter and walked out).

Now Borders is selling cards too. I won't buy theirs either. But at least they're not jerks about it, and take "no" for an answer; B&N, in my experience, won't take "sod off and die" for an answer.

BAM ... well, if I were in the market for Christian books, they'd be the place to go. But I want science fiction, fantasy, the occasional mystery, interesting discount books, and sometimes scientific trade paperbacks (if you've never read anything by Jared Diamond, for instance, start!). Given how little of the above my local BAM stocks -- virtually none -- it's not even worth stopping there unless I'm in their parking lot anyway. I go an hour to the nearest Borders instead of 10 minutes to the nearest BAM, because the latter is just a waste of time.

Or I go to Amazon and click, it'll be here day-after-tomorrow, which is probably when I can find some time to read it anyway.

Oh, I hate those things. That said, the Borders one is free and the B&N one is something ridiculous like $25/year. I believe I have a Borders card because I wanted a 40% off coupon several years ago, but I'm not paying for a loyalty card.

I guess I'm lucky, my BAM not only has a pretty decent selection of SF/Fantasy (and a much larger selection of graphic novels than Borders used to) but they also not only let us play D&D there - and actively mention their appreciation for our gaming group.

Admittedly it probably doesn't hurt that the cafeteria manager wears a Mjolnir pendant rather than a cross - and that we buy at least some of our game books there.

I happily pay for the BAM card - but they also let us play D&D there for up to 12 hours at a stretch and don't even bat an eye if we bring outside food into their coffeeshop while we do it.

Combine that with the free/discounted coffee I get, and I'm more than willing to give them $20/year rent on my gaming space.

I picked up a Kobo last night for $59.99 at a closing Borders. There were several other people buying them when I was there. The staff was astonishingly upbeat and nice. The young man who rang me up positively gushed over what a good deal I was getting on the Kobo. I felt like a vulture.

Two more stores closing in my area...

We had two Borders on this island. One closed last year, the other is closing this year. Now, for pbooks, our choices are Target, Walmart, KMart.... and some local used bookstores. If we want something else, we have to book a flight.

I'm kind of surprised they closed ours, it always seemed to be pretty busy. Then again, I never shopped there, I just liked the atmosphere, and it was a great place to kill a little time.

How are the Barnes and Noble stores and the Walden Books stores doing in comparison? Or is this just a Borders thing, for some odd reason?

I can only speak for my local BAM - I was told sales are up despite the Borders closeout sale half a mile down the road.

Walden Books stores are owned by Borders. Many of them have been converted to Borders Express stores by now.

I've no idea how long my local BAM has been open - it was here before I was - but it's a big store with a decent selection (though it could do without the dark brown interior color scheme).

It was just interesting to hear that despite the insane lines in Borders, BAM's sales are up too.
