I have both a Kindle and a Sony PRS-350, and prefer reading on the Kindle. Where the Kindle wins massively is the ease of buying books, especially with the 3G model. Browse the bookstore on the device, press a button, and you have the book in a few seconds, virtually anywhere in the world. Compare that with the not terribly user-friendly eBook Library software that the Sony uses, and there's really no comparison. The Sony is a very nice reader, yes, but I think the Kindle is a lot better.

Look in Settings for iBook...I believe you can set the page turn to occur with a tap on either the left or right side. It's been a while since I sold my iPad but I do remember changing that setting because the swipe is so tiring.

After what seems like an eternity, i went out and purchased the Kindle today. I love it! While i continue to wait for the "perfect" device (something i've realized never comes to fruition in the tech world), I think i'll be more than happy with it. I've yet to seriously dive into it, and have only done some light reading but i've really enjoyed the Kindle thus far. I have a long flight in store tomorrow, so i'll have plenty of time to learn it then.

Again, thanks to everyone hear for helping make this decision!

I think what makes the kindle so appealing is that it is as simple and basic as they come. It is an ereader with no frills.

I just wanted to update you all since i have been on vacation, and haven't had much time to post. As i had a bit more time with the kindle before my trip, i had run into a few issues, that i won't get into in too much detail. Mainly some formatting issues (The way content was displayed) using calibre to convert to mobi. I'm sure i could've worked around this, but thought it wasn't worth the time and effort.

Then there was the bigger issue. The one i thought wouldn't be a dagger, but was. The lack of library book support. In the end i returned the kindle in favor of the nook. And i must admit, i'm really glad i did. I absolutely love the nook. My two biggest concerns, the touchscreen and the speed of the device turned out to be complete non issues. In the store it was something i definitely noticed, but since owning one, I haven't had one single problem with either. I admit, the B&N store isn't as robust as amazon, but coupled with library support, it will be more than sufficient for me.

Thanks all again for all the advice. I really am loving the nook and am finally happy i've been able to settle on one device and be content!

One of my biggest concerns if conversion. Can you detail what kind of issues you found?

The OP may have other issues, but in my case, I have found that converting books with very basic formatting normally works OK, but some recent books with fancier formatting, like specially indented passages, or using custom fonts, or even simple Drop Caps, can cause issues.

If you're lucky, the book still remains readable, and all that happens is that some of the fancy formatting gets replaced with something simpler. For example, indented passages may not show up as indented; Or the large Drop-Cap letters at the beginning of each chapter are replaced by standard sized equivalents (which also may, or may not, also be displayed in the wrong position). In other cases margins could convert badly, leaving super wide margins on both sides, or a full inch margin on one side and a quarter inch on the other.

Depending on your tolerance for these kinds of annoyances, perhaps one time in ten, the results of the basic conversion may so bad that you will not find them acceptable until you reconvert the file after tweaking the EPUB to fix the elements that are causing the trouble.

Also, despite having an otherwise fairly quick and responsive CPU on my Netbook (it handles 720p HD video just fine) these Calibre format conversion can take 10 to 15 minutes each, so if it takes two or three iterations to get an acceptable result, this gets to be a pain fairly quickly.

Weird.

I've never had any conversions problems from mobi to ePub or viceverse, including some computer books with heavy formatting. I could probably say was a book issue maybe? I mean, my whole collection is on both formats and have no single book which had conversion problems.

Anyway, if you like and prefer the Nook, please enjoy. What's more important here is that you will be able to start reading and enjoying electronic books, at last.

Glad to hear you are enjoying the Nook, it really is such a joy to use. It is tough to get a true sense of the device in the store especially something like a Best Buy where you just don't know how many people have doing this or that and not having the sales reps, power them down or reset things etc. It can make things seem lagging but in reality there just not .

My friend at work had the same issue when converting books on his Kindle, this is something most kindle owners won't acknowledge here on these forums. Formating is an issue. They will always holler, "You can convert anything to mobi" but not all conversions run smooth. My friend has about 50 Stephen King books that are unreadable because of formating issues and about 100 more misc. books. Most do convert ok but this is never a guarantee.

but anywho enjoy your nook, it is really is IMHO the best general ereader feature to price available on the market.

While I can't deny that others may run into formatting issues when converting formats, I can only say that I have yet to see any problem from conversion of books I've gotten from Borders, B&N, the library, etc.

I have yet to find a TS that I prefer over a physical KB, including the iPad. But that's a personal preference.
