However, I have loaded about a dozen books, plus a couple of news feeds daily. Would that account for it?

With WiFi on your battery will last maybe 7 days with light use. If you are a heavy reader or use the browser much it's much shorter then that. There is no way to turn 3G off even if WiFi is on so the 3G model drains fairly quickly if you leave WiFi on. It's best to leave it off and only use it only when necessary.
Even with WiFi off if you are heavy reader your battery life will be shorten more. Add Indexing to the mix and any web surfing and the battery life varies. I find with keeping WiFi off unless I need it and with my heavy reading habits I get two weeks of battery usage but I do plug in my reader for heavy indexing if I am going to add more then 10 regular size books.
The Lighted Cover will also drain your battery if used alot. However if after you turn off WiFi and you don't see a real improvement. I would check to see if the Kindle is stuck indexing a book. It's known to do that occasionally. You can do a search using gibberish and it will show anything not index. Also you can try restarting the Kindle before charging it and make sure you are using the latest firmware. Keep in mind Restarting the Kindle sucks the battery life right out it so I only restart if it locks up or if the browser is acting up. There no need to turn the Kindle off when not using it. It will go to sleep or a simple slide of the slider button will put it to sleep. Sure the seeing ugly dead people gets old but it preserves battery life.
