My 350 is faster than my KDX and I think the screen displays better.

If not exactly the same, it's very close. And I only have about 20 books on them. Both are jailbroken and have PRS+ installed. If I set them side-by-side and push the page turn buttons or other operations (go to menu, view settings, etc) the 350 always displays the page with a bit of lag behind the 650. The Kindle and 650 are very much a wash, although I think the 650 is slower by a sliver.

What it comes down to in practical use is the 650 feels more snappy. It's like using a new computer vs one that is 1-2 years old. Both are very usable, but one is a bit faster at everything.

As someone recently told me on this forum, please don't weight your purchase decisions on my opinions about the speed of these devices or the quality of their displays. I bet a lot of people will find either of these to be just fine for their use, and may not notice these little differences. The 650 is a great reader, and were it not for some personal preferences I would keep it in a heartbeat.

The K3 doesn't have a "built-in light". I'm not sure what you are referring to. ???

The Sony readers go to sleep when not being used. Battery life is not as good as Kindle, but it's good enough for most people.

I switch daily between the K3, 350 & 950. Can't say I've ever noticed any obvious difference in speed. I love my new 350. It's great for portability and carrying in my purse. I've got about 300 books on my 350, about 150 on my K3 and about 600 on my 950. I actually prefer reading on my Sony's screens to my K3. I think they are all great devices and would equally recommend them depending on an individual's specific end needs.

The K3 does have a cover with a built in light where the light is fed from the K3 thus shutting down when the K3 goes to sleep. Sony has a cover with a built in light that is fed from batteries and has to be shut down on itself. This is what CharlieBird is talking about.

Yeah, this one puts me off, too! And it is extremly bright and white. Actually this is the only thing I've seen that Kindle does better than Sony.

I have the Sony case with the light and the light goes out when you put it back in its spot and close the case. It goes out immediately and doesn't require the reader to go to sleep. The only way the light stays on is when the light is removed from its spot in the case so I'm not sure what you're getting at.

Actually you would know what I am getting at if you had read the thread and not only the last post. As you can obviously not be troubled to do so, let me tell you.

The fact that when you fall asleep reading like CharlieBird said he does, this is what I am getting at. In this case your reader turns off by itself but the light doesn't. You have to put it back in its spot and shut the case as you said yourself whereas the Kindle lights turn off when the reader does.

The full weight of my decision wasn't based only on your opinions. Mostly it seemed a frivolous expenditure as the 350 and the QT7 happily meet all my e-reading needs. The 650 would just be a bit more sophisticated/larger version of the 350.

I meant the K3 light integrated with the K3 cover...it goes off when the K3 goes to sleep. This is not the case with the integrated light on the 350 cover; you have to physically turn it off on mine.

Battery life is seldom a consideration for me as I do most of my reading at home. The battery life on the QT7 is abysmal and I still love it!

My 350 seems faster than my K3, but that could be that swiping to turn the page seems more natural than pressing a button. I've played with the 650 & 950 in the store, & never noticed that any one of the 3 Sonys were faster.

Any X50 Sony is better than the K3, IMHO, but the Amazon Advantage remains.

OK, something funny is going on. I suspect that something may be with my head, 'cause I went to do a video of the speed differences... only to discover that my 350 and 650 were the same speed. And I noticed this before I even started doing the video. I think maybe I restarted the 350 a few times and it cleared up... something. I tried restarting it before and it didn't make a difference. Or maybe I removed some books from the 350 or added some to the 650, who knows. The problem WAS there, I observed it for the last two weeks, but now it's NOT.

Now I'm wondering what I did that could have caused this. I DID go through Calibre and redo all the author names. This, incidentally, got rid of my notes when I started the 350 back up (probably because the filenames changed?) Related, perhaps?

There can be a difference in screen update time due to temperature or the complexity of the book (embedded fonts, or complex formatting slows things down slightly).

If you were using the exact same book, then it was most likely temperature related (a few degrees colder temperature will SLOW down the screen update slightly, this is by design, and not an indication of any trouble).

The lack of notes might be a good theory for the difference in speed. There have a been a few threads recently that people have observed that their ereader seems slower depending on how many books and notes they have, especially for PDF files.

If the titles on both readers aren't exactly the same, it's not a real comparison IMO.
