Yup, the kindle needs a lanyard - like a subway car has a lanyard for people - the strap (do they still have them - it has been years since I was in a NYC subway car - I remember the plastic cane seating - 3 years commuting to HS)

Trendy Digital sells a waterproof bag that has a lanyard attached to it that would probably work.

There are no lanyards, just cold rounded metal bars. They put them too far back over the seats, so you have to reach over people in the seats. It's too bad the Kindle doesn't have somewhere to fit in a wrist strap like on gaming portables.

Books just seem awkward and cumbersome now. Just wanted to say how much I love it!
I know the feeling. A coworker recently loaned me an out of print pbook printed in the mid 70s and I've been suffering through it. I have to hold it open, can't read it while I'm doing other things, the binding is weak at one point (and I'm terrified to return it in broken condition), the pages are yellowing, and I sure wish that I could just buy it in ebook format!!

IIRC the Kindle version of WFE is "only" $5... might be worth the lack of pain. :-)

I think having a kindle will FINALLY give me an excuse not to lend a book. I've had too many bad experiences where people either never returned what they borrowed or it was in very bad shape. Needless to say, those people and I never got to be good friends

I remember long ago being the recipient of a borrowed book and spilling water on it... the guy was around when it happened and even though I offered to replace it, he wouldn't accept it. Another time, same guy, different book, I returned it with the binding slightly more broken down than he liked and he was extremely upset... oops. I hate borrowing books (the one I mentioned in my previous post was taken quite reluctantly) and would love to be able to borrow them as ebooks to avoid the fear of messing them up... that said, I refuse to borrow ebooks as I don't want to "use up" their lending period, especially since I don't get as much reading time as I'd like and don't necessarily finish them in two weeks, "wasting" their one and only loan.

my worst experience was in high school. i lent a book to a friend, and when i casually asked for it back, they said they LOANED IT TO SOMEONE ELSE. then that someone else loaned it to someone else...you get the idea. i got the book back in tatters. it was extremely rude of them.

Ah, but then people will just start asking you to lend you the Kindle itself. :-) "Um, could you bring it over when you come to dinner? I just want to look at it again to see if I want to buy one," they'll say. "Um, you still have (mentions book title) on it, right?"

My wife didn't like the idea of the device. She loves books. Now that I have a couple of books on the K3 that she wants to read, it's difficult getting the thing out of her hands. :)

You'll know all is lost when you hear: "If you really loved me, you'd let me read it." Or in slightly less dire circumstances: "But I thought you were my friend!"

These problems can be solved immediately, of course, by downloading only books written backwards in 4-pt. Esperanto.

Make an account at webscriptions and buy Baen-ebooks from there, that way the author still gets money.

(I received $LOTS in micropay on webscriptions once, as a gift )

This was my first thought for subway use also. I've had this one on my wish list for quite some time.

The only problem is that I'm enough of a nerd to wear it around my neck at all times. I'm old enough to be beyond caring what people think but it may embarrass my kids.

Good point. I always wondered why the Nook (Barns and Noble) had a lanyard. Now I see there is a need for it. Down here in the South there are no subways and very few ride the bus.

I like lanyards - maybe to offset the potential klutz in me (I've actually dropped very few devices over the years). I added one to my BB before they provided such an anchor point and to my Tomtom car gps. And my camera's lanyard is further "lanyarded" to my camera's case with a longer strap (reaching out over the Grand Canyon and off Angel's Landing one can't be too safe).

I've managed to get monofilament fishing line into and around nooks and crannies to create missing attachment points.
