I honestly don't remember. I would have read it on my DOS based 286 PC back in 1992. I had bought the then new NEC CDR-73 external drive (SCSI interface) and among my first CDs was a World Library CD loaded with some 50-100 classics. I read a number of titles from that CD before the internet gave me access to Project Gutenberg.

Like dwig, I also had a World Library CD. Mine came with my first Windows computer in 1996. I don't think I read anything on it though. I still have the CD, came across it the other day.
My first etext that I read (from Gutenberg) was an Arthurian something-or-other by Chrétien de Troyes somewhere around 1997. My first ebook for reading on the PC was from Fictionwise - one of a batch of short stories, don't remember which story was first - around 2005, I believe. My first ebook purchased specifically for reading on an ereader was _Anthill: A Novel_ by E.O. Wilson. Funny thing is, I bought the book and had it sent to K4PC because I hadn't bought a Kindle yet. I ended up deciding not to buy a Kindle then. Several months later, I finally bought my Kindle, but I still haven't gotten around to reading that book. The first book I actually read on my Kindle (not counting the manual) was a Harlequin romance. Don't know which one; I didn't start keeping track until January 1st. I do know that there was a cop in it, but that doesn't really narrow it down much. |

The first one I bought was The Guns Of August. But the first one I finished was World War Z. The first freebie was just the sample chapter of Atlantic by Winchester, which I then bought a hardback copy of as a gift.

His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik
It was recommended to me and I didn't feel like driving to the bookstore so I decided to try this "eBook" thing. At the time B&N had it cheaper, so I bought it from them and read about 3 chapters on my iPhone before buying a nook. |

I can't recall my first book either -- like you, I thought I could read ebooks on my notebook instead of getting a reader, which lasted about two library books before I broke down and got a used 505 from E-bay!

The other books were: Cursor's Fury by Jim Butcher Shaman's Crossing: The Second Son Trilogy by Robin Hobb Renegade's Magic by Robin Hobb Forest Mage: The Second Son Trilogy by Robin Hobb, Indignation by Philip Roth |

I received my Kindle in early December. The first ebook I read on it was my husband's book, which was just being published.
The first book I downloaded and read was The Road by Jack London. |

I can't remember. I know I read The Dead Zone at some point in my early e-reading days, but I don't think it was my first. I guess my first wasn't especially memorable....

Mine was either The Living Shadow or Doc Savage Man of Bronze. I got these from the original incarnation of Blackmask (before they were all removed) and read them on my old (and now dead) Cassiopeia PDA.
The first ebook i bought was Last Man Standing by David Baldacci. I bought it just to see if I could deDRM the LIT file and convert it to LRF. |

It was _The Authoritarians_ by Bob Altermeyer. I got the pdf online and read it in Acrobat. The first fiction e-book I read was _Midnight Angel_ by Lisa Kleypas--my experiment is checking e-books out of the library and reading them on my PC (using ADE as a reader).
After all that it was nice to get my nook and iPhone and be able to actually take my books with me to work, into the bathroom, etc. |

My first ebook purchase was The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Sutterfield. It's what I was reading in hardback, and I wanted to do a direct comparison. At the time (early 2007) the Sony 500 came with a $50 gift certificate to the Sony ebookstore.
