Sin is the new black it seems. Now about iOS porn in the workplace it would seem to need to be somehow transcoded from Flash before most jobs would allow it. But as long as you could track your usage with "Confession" then it should be cool.

This is too funny! Forgiveness by phone? It's my experience that most Catholics these days don't use the sacrament of Confession any more. The Catholic church even changed the name, it's not called Confession anymore, it's called Reconciliation.

I thought it was funny when they told us we could do our tithe by direct deposit. I thought, yeah, so your money can go to church even if you don't!

thanks for that link but we had it very early in the thread. The article and you missed what this app really does. Nowhere did it suggest one could do their confession via the app. I mean think about that for more than a moment, confession requires what? Come on you know the answer...a freaking priest, yes? So, just how would an app manage that? Well, maybe when the currently under development Priest-o-matic and Priest-in-a-Can apps are done then perhaps, but for the foreseeable future one kinda needs the human on the other side of that screen, or for the really brave - or foolhardy some might say - there is the face-to-face option.

That is not a problem as it's no different than keeping a journal and while The Church might have tried to ban reading and writing among the peasantry they learned from other peoples who tried the same thing so reading and writing are still cool with them. So if a person can use a journal then there will be no problem using the iOS app. In fact the developers went on to state the would love to work to help assure the Vatican what this app does and what it's purpose is...

Plus remember, for Catholics it might be a "sin" to use it, but isn't that what confession is for? So, use it all ya want then just sneak in the "forgive me father for I have sinned, I used the iOS app 'Confession' to keep this list of sins. It was only $1.99 and made it so much easier between confessions, you know the stress of trying to remember everything I did wrong since my last confession. I mean look, were it not for this app, there must be 200 more things we need to cover which I otherwise might have forgotten until it was too late, now I can completely clear my bucket-list here and now...how cool is that?"

I find humor in this as do many people, and as I mentioned a very dear friend of mine who happens to be the Parish Priest in a small town in California, thinks the same, in fact he was who sent me the link. K? It's not about making fun of the church and their beliefs but it's about the quite funny relationship of low-tech (religion) meets high-tech (the whole iOS generation and it's cousins). So, let's keep the fun in this thread and glad you added the link because people do need to remember to actually READ these links and not assume things like this app being about replacing confession with a device in your pocket.

Just a couple of minor points.

1. The App in question is not so people can maintain a list of what sins they feel they committed, rather it is to help them examine their conscience so they are reasonably certain to confess all the mortal sins they have committed.

2. Using such an application would not be in itself a sin. No Catholic is obligated to keep their own confession silent only their confessor is.

3. The Church never tried to ban reading and writing. There is quite a bit of folk lore that developed around a couple of things. The first was that the Bible was often chained down in Churches. Bibles at the time were copied by hand, and as a result were incredibly expensive. Thus the Bible was chained down to protect it from theft and damage. The second was the Church's prohibition on unauthorized translations of the Bible. In an era before copyright, the Bible was essentially the one copyrighted book.. and the Church was the copyright holder

. It got cranky with people using its intellectual property for profit (particularly considering that many of those early translations were not very good!).

No, the name has not changed. Hearsay is a sad thing. A quick stop by www.newadvent.org/cathen/ will clear this up. But I guess it's just more fun to laugh at people's beliefs than to find out the truth of things.

As far as I know, this has already been done with smartphones that have GPS/compass...points you in the right direction...

Take GPS, add calls to prayer (five times a day) and you've got a Muslim app. You've gotta let the user adjust the timing of calls to prayer to match times for his location, of course.

As I made some of the quips in this thread I would point out that they were all directed at the app, not the Catholic faith or its believers. I think the app itself should shoulder all the abuse it deserves, and was correctly denounced by the Church.

Hang on there, the app most definitely has not been denounced. This app obtained an imprimatur before being published, and is thus officially sanctioned by the Catholic Church. I think people are getting confused between the quips that have been going around and the app itself.

As for an app to show the direction of Mecca - that's old news.
