There's rumored to be a internal memo saying not to take more than one at the stores, but I don't see how they can really enforce that. These aren't special Groupon GCs, they are just normal B&N GCs. So unless B&N has decided to curtail GC use, then there's nothing they can really do. Many stores are still taking as many as you want to use.
For Californians, there's no risk. Even if B&N offically decides to only accept one GC per transaction and you don't won't to be saddled with GCs you won't or don't want to use, just wait until April when the $10 promotion value evaporates. Then they are just $10 GCs. At that point B&N has to cash them out for you. It's California law. I do it all the time at Target. Whenever they have a sale where they give you a $5 giftcard to buy an item, I held over to the customer service desk right after checking out. I hand it to them and they hand me a $5 bill. |

In WA, the value can not decrease. So I'm safe there. I'm going to use it for a cover for my NC.
The company CAN restrict since the Groupon states 1 per person, 1 per transaction. They also are prohibiting the purchase of more gift cards with the groupon. |

Anyway, if you try to buy the Nook online to get the 4.5% CB, you can only use 3 GC so you will be left with more GC that you intended to use to cover the entire price of the Nook Color. The phone order is YMMV for now. Best bet is in-store but do not present the email that Groupon sends you which has the 1/person & 1/trans. restriction. Instead, write down the codes and PINs or use a barcode generator so the cashier cannot tell that they came from Groupon. If they ask where you got them, tell them that they were gifts that you collected from friends and family. Last edited by esquire415; 02-08-2011 at 04:55 PM. |

Groupons are just like regular BN egift cards. They have identical starting sequence. The only reason people are being denied is because all the stores got the "memo" from headquarters warning them about Groupon gift cards. If you have them and in a hurry just go to your local store, tell them you accumulated egift cards and would like to buy something. If you can, just wait it out. In a week or 2 groupon deal will be forgotten, restrictions will be lifted and BN would be back to its old normal self with overpriced stuff

Really? You probably did this when the Groupon first came out or over the weekend. You are lucky. Maybe I should have just brought the Groupon forms which I was thinking of doing. I just didn't think about having them call a corporate supervisor. I generated eGift cards out of the 14 Groupon forms I received (as was recommended at the Slickdeals.net site) and when I presented it to the cashier, the manager went over as soon as she heard that I'm paying with my eGift cards. Then she said they received a memo that there have been people generating eGift cards from the Groupon deal and she said that my eGift cards have the Groupon numbers and are fraudulent. She confiscated them! I asked for it back and she said that they have to be destroyed. Maybe I should have done what you did by bringing in the Groupon forms and have them call corporate. In my panic that they might void my codes, I hastily used them all online to purchase 14 items worth ~$20 and plan of returning them for a GC or credit back to my CC (which would be sweeter!). Had to subscribe for the free 2 month membership at BN.com to get free shipping. Used 3 accounts to avoid suspicion. It sucks that I have to go through these hoops while some people got theirs with no hassle.
The thing is, there is really no difference if they use the numbers from the Groupon forms or the barcode generated Gift cards. They are equally legit and will both stack, otherwise, the system will prevent the cashier from entering more codes in a single transaction. Last edited by esquire415; 02-11-2011 at 06:00 PM. |

What are these B&N employees thinking? The print outs are just numbers, it's not like you can't print them out again. Last edited by travfar; 02-11-2011 at 04:18 PM. |

I could have challenged her, and tell her to enter them and if it doesn't work, then it's fraudulent but I didn't want to call attention and have a fight. I work for the owners of the building so it's not like I will not be seeing them again. Yea, I could just print them again and go to another store or use the actual Groupon forms but I was afraid that she would report the codes and void them plus I want to avoid the same incident happening again that's why I went the online route. I should have acted on this deal when it first came out before B&N realized what was happening.
If Corporate say that they can stack the Groupons anyway, how is that different from converting them to eGift cards with the barcodes in them? With bar codes, the cashier do not need to enter the codes manually. The Groupon forms are good as gift cards and they have value in them of $20. Because they are legit numbers, she actually stole from me. The cashier that I spoke to said I couldn't have them back because they are fraudulent and that using them is the same as stealing! LOL, they turned it around on me! Last edited by esquire415; 02-11-2011 at 06:38 PM. |

I'm of the opinion that they should not have taken them from you. It's just paper, but still, I'd have handed them back and sent you on your way.
Like I said, the Groupon's have unique beginning numbers, we'd know. There's a strict 1 per person, 1 per transaction. If we don't follow it, we don't get the money. So yes, technically we can process them but that doesn't mean Corporate won't audit us and not give us the funds. Return all the items, get your store credit/gift card(s), and use that. Then all the money's settled and in its place. |

I am disgusted, the groupon clearly states one per customer one per transaction.
You stole this nook and you knew you were stealing it when you did it. Karma is real and you deserve what’s coming. If Barnes and Noble were your business would you want to be treated this way. I guess its okay because you got away with it right. I hope this haunts you in your sleep for years to come. Is there no sense of right and wrong left. Is it screw everyone? And look at me and what I got away with. I hope someone steals you nook. You deserve it. |

For all those who took the advice and are waiting it out until all the talk blows over.
Groupons not used before they expire become only worth what you paid. So your 20 groupon will only be worth th 10 you paid. So please wait. |
