I just tell 'em I have inflammatory arthritis and can't hold a book open for long. I can read for hours with my kindle. Shuts 'em right up, and reminds people that some disabilities are invisible to boot.

I used to be someone how did not like electronic books. I didn't see myself reading on a computer or on my phone. But when I saw someone reading with a eReader I was impressed by the quality of the text, it is much better than a computer screen. But having a couple of hundred books at hand, is very handy. Even more when on the bus and you just finished your book and don't have the following one, the trip gets boring. But no more, I can just load up the next one. And it is a lot more portable.

The comments I have are mostly positive, but I guess that it is only for people how do read regularly.

I have been asked :
  • Will you buy an iPad to read your books instead? Yeah right like I am going to buy a 600$ big iPOd just to read books, when my eReader is perfect for that, and easy on the eyes. (I already have an iPhone so no need for one)
  • Is that a phone? Really that big of a Phone? Some people are just... too dump.

"Yeah, well, I really like the 'experience' of having a real book in my hand!"
Honestly, so do I. It doesn't have to be a competition between ereader and paper books. I recently bought a hardcover that was a sequel to a book I read in ebook form. It was the sequel to The Monstrumologist, which is a supernatural tale set in the 1800s. I was so enamored with the period theme and language that I wanted to experience it in a good ol' bound tome, plus I loved the cover art.

I like my Kindle, but I still love real books. I'll enjoy both.

I have had the 'nothing like a real book' comment thrown at me, so I take my K3 out of the case and hand it to them to play with....most retract the 'real book' thing and are very much impressed with the Kindle size/weight and ease of use.

I smile and ask them why they think I have to give up pbooks, just because I have this.
I just have more options for reading, is all.

I got the statement about the ipad as well - "yeah the ipad is great if you want to vastly over pay for a proprietary hardware and be forced to buy what ever some giant corporation decides you should read." "Oh, you want to read that, I'm sorry our company has decided that you shouldn't read that so its not available for your hardware." Not exactly my idea of a great reader. Fortunately my reader is not loyal to anyone and the merchants out there really could care less what I read as long as I am willing to pay them for it.

It's 50/50 for me. Half are truly interested and the others usually online say they can't see not reading a real book but it doesn't bother me. It's the way of the world, when the cars first came out, there were folks saying a horse was better.

Am proud! I said something entirely new today. I said, I can see their point, I have a similar feeling now that I am used to have a fine calf skin bound lightweight book, I simply can not stand the poorly made pbooks anymore. Being a booklover it is so sad a feeling, I can't be troubled to stand it. Right now I would be thinking about buying a leather passepartout for my books...

The face she pulled was awesome!

Funny thing is, I am really going to buy that bookcover.

What I resent about the iPad (and similarly about the iPod), is that some people seem to think that ebook readers were invented by Apple with it, or that it must be the ultimate ebook reader. Otherwise, I've got nothing against the iPad, it might be a good handheld computer for someone who wants it, and I'd probably enjoy having one too, but it's not an ebook reader (although it can be used to read books).

During this year (Or the next) when the other tablets gain a foothold and become real competition to Apple's iPad, I'm sure we'll be seeing a bit less of the "iPad is the only tablet based eBook reader" sentiment. Apple did get a pretty big head start in the new tablet market, and while the tech savvy people will start to refer more generically to tablets, iPad - like iPhone and iPod - might just simply end up becoming a generic term for "tablet."

Anyway, right now, talking about the iPad being the ultimate eBook reader is really talking about mobile OS based tablets being the ultimate eBook readers. The iPad is really the only one that's been available up until recently (with the launch of the Galaxy Tab)

I've had this discussion on a few boards & with people I've met. At one time I was one of those people.....3 e-readers later I can't say that I prefer paper books now...I really do prefer my e-readers & now that I have a Sony PRS 350 I really enjoy taking my books with me everywhere.

I have decided to stop replying to that statement. I used to say try one, but a lot of people don't have access. I have told them to come here & read what people have said about their e-readers, but I don't know how many do come here. I think if the did more people I know would get one.

3 times since I bougt my reader I have been asked if it is an Ipad - the conversation goes something like:

Stranger: Is that one of them Ipads?

Me: No its an ereader.

Stranger: ...

Me: Anyway. :S
