The saga continues. I picked up a Sony 350 yesterday and I really do like it. But then I use my nook (now updated) and I find myself wanting to keep it. I told my husband it is like I want the nook, but "should" keep the sony. Main reasons for giving up the nook are weight and battery life between charges, and the sony being on sale for 129 US.

While I love the size of the 350, I would prefer a bigger screen. So then I think I should wait for the 650's to come back. But they're the same price as the nook, and I would give up color and wifi, for e-ink, lightweight and expandable memory (as compared to the 350).

The touch screen on the sony is very nice, but I sure feel like I'm using that option button alot.

Guess I "have" to spend time reading today to sort myself out, tomorrow is the last day I can return the nook.

I have a very sweet friend, she doesn't see me as crazy, but instead tells her friends, "if you want to buy anything wait until Deborah checks into it, she will figure all the pros and cons out for you". Positive spin on indecision. I like it.

DJ,
If you like to experience prospective EBR's in action, search for YouTube videos of the devices under consideration. I found this very helpful in my search for an EBR.

Analysis paralysis. Been there, done that, got the teeshirt.

Have you considered the Sony PRS-950? I know it's expensive, but you get wifi, 3g, the touchscreen, 7" screen size, and it is still lightweight.

It's a shame, if Sony would just price more competitively, they could really be a contender.

Yes, I have considered it. I am in Canada though and the 3G won't work. I could still use it, but its a lot of money. I agree about Sony's pricing.

deborahjeanne, I loved reading this thread. I have been wanting a Sony 950 since I first read about them. I tried one at a Best Buy and I LOVE it. It is just so expensive. I really like the Kindle 3 to. I have a Kindle 2 and use it every day.
I got a gift card to Barnes and Noble and one to Borders and thought I would use one of them to buy a second e-reader. I know, my kids keep saying "Why do you want another one?" I just don't know. The Nook is really nice and reads e-pub, but the Sony is so much nicer. I don't want another Kindle because it doesn't read e-pub.
Sometimes I think I would have a basketful of e-readers if I could afford it, so it was nice to read about your process.

Thanks. I hinted that it would be nice to have both an e-ink and lcd screen for ereaders, and I got "the look".

Currently I have returned the nook. The manager felt the concerns I had were individual to my nook (primarily that the touch screen didn't work properly when the nook was charging), and encouraged me to try another. They were currently sold out, so I can think about it.

So currently with the 350, we'll see if I am missing the nook.

Enjoy your 350. It sounds like you have some time to make a decision.

You are not alone. There is a reason why people on this site have multiple ereaders, some of it is love of gadgets but most of it is wanting devices that fill different needs.

The touchscreen not working properly when charging is a known problem, acknowledged by B&N.
This problem is caused by the charger. Only the charger needs to be replaced. The B&N store should have known this.

It is sad that Nook support in stores at this time is still such a hit or miss thing. Especially for a well known problem like this.
If B&N wants to make their Nook e-readers a success, the really need to train their support people better (in stores and telephone support).

I agree. I've get two in my area that are close by, one they had this elderly lady on and she was so clueless to the point it was painful that I had to respectfully butt in and take over the explanation of the nook eink. I closed the sale for her, LOL (Man BN owes me alot in commision) but on the other hand the second BN near me has staff that could rivil the genius bar at the Apple Store. These guys are good, really knowledgable.

Deborahjeanne,
I feel your pain I finally went with the Sony 900 last year and can't wait to get a new one this year. I think I'm going to go with the 650 this time because it's smaller. Love the 900 though. And of course people think I'm nuts, "why do you need another reader, didn't you just buy one?". I also just purchased a tablet which has several e-reader applications, including Amazon and B&N. Main disadvantage is no e-ink, but the touch screen is nice.

All of the book sellers (Amazon, B&N, Borders etc) have an app for your computer. I downloaded all of the major apps so that I can get books from all of them and then import the books to my reader after doing that thing we don't talk about here. BTW I love calibre.

B&N doesn't have an app for my mac. All they have is a reader.

I don't do that thing to my books, so I don't think I can use calibre. I haven't had the chance to sit and play with it.

I mentioned a to a couple of different people that this problem had been mentioned on the internet. The first guy was sort of like "do a hard reset that usually fixes things" and I'm fairly sure he didn't see what my problem was. I even explained that just having the nook color sitting on a counter with a bunch of kobo's caused it not to work (ie the vibration). It behaved the same with his charger or mine, with his nook on my charger or his. He made no offer to exchange anything. It was probably an hour later when I just decided the heck with it, I was going to return it.

Yes, their support is very poor. Which is silly since they have "nook specialists" . I have actually yet to contact their support, the phone keeps cutting me off saying they can't connect my call, and the chat support never did respond. It is one of the big minuses against the nook for me.

I was a bit concerned about using Calibre and the associated plugins. Apprentice Alf's blog is great. It walks you through the entire process with very clear instructions. It took me about 30 minutes to have Calibre with plugins downloaded and running.

I say this only because it does give you an option if you want to keep the Sony and read your BN books.
