...but I can (and do) use .azw files without DRM on my Kindle. If AZW and MOBI are the same, then what difference does it make which extension is used whether drm is on the file or not? |

There are 2 kinds of DRM that can be attached to Mobipocket files.
One of them is the old Mobipocket DRM, which Amazon in its infinite wisdom decided not to officially support on the Kindle. This is what's used at libraries and sold as "Secure Mobipocket" in the non-Amazon stores. The other is the newer Kindle DRM, which is not backwards-compatible with older/non-Amazon Mobipocket-supporting devices. Apparently the difference between them is pretty minimal and can be "fixed" with a script which just modifies some minor stuff to allow a Kindle to read the files without stripping them. |

But yes, Amazon made a choice to deliberately restrict Kindles to read DRMed ebooks only from the Kindle store, and not from Mobipocket ebook stores. While there were work-arounds early on, most Mobipocket ebook stores (the few that are left) won't now accept the PID generated from the Kindle serial number. The only solution is to just strip the DRM, although this may or may not be legal, depending on how your country's laws are written and interpreted. |
