It's not the format. It's the DRM. As far as I know, amazon DRM is proprietary.

My library is poor enough. I don't think it's reasonable to expect it to buy another collection of books just to satisfy one single ereader, even a popular one. Like it or not, the adobe digital ePub is the standard we have for library. I don't want tax money to subsidize amazon.

Somehow I have a hard time picturing a court saying it's ok for you to strip drm from books belonging to the library, allowing you to use it without the normal limitation that normally comes with library books, because you pay taxes.

This reminds me of people ranting about getting a speeding tickets because they're hard working, tax paying citizens. Well, good for you, but you still can't speed.

Barty,

Sorry but I can't quite draw the connection with your speeding example.

To me the library issue is like saying that they will lend to Chevy, Ford and Chrysler drivers but not Honda or Toyota drivers (to use a car analogy). Who cares how I get to the library?

The books are there to be freely lent out for reading. I check out a book and freely read it. If the purpose of DRM on a library book is to prevent the book being copied and kept or distributed illegally, and I police myself, then I consider myself as being in compliance with the spirit of the law, if not technically so. No harm, no foul.

But they cannot. Amazon controls the DRM server for Kindle eBooks. So ePub it is. But if you really wanted to read library eBooks without stripping/converting, you should have gotten a compatible reader instead of a Kindle.

The library is saying we have eBooks, we have a list of compatible devices that Overdrive links to. You did not look at that list before you bought the wrong reader. So it's not the library's fault. It is your fault.

No. In point of fact I did check before buying. I did not want any of the devices the library said was compatible. Thus I researched and learned what I needed to know in order to use the device of my choice.

I would do it exactly the same way if I had it to do all over again.

Hear, hear! I couldn't agree more. Not only would I do it again, I did do it again. I have the best e-reader on the market, bar none, and I can read library books on it also...Life is good!!

The simple facts are:
Can you read library books on a Kindle? --- Yes
Is it difficult? --- Not really, on a scale of 1-10, about a 3.
Is stripping DRM and converting okay? --- Individual ethical/moral decision.

Everything else about this topic is fluff and rant.
