The Mysterious Benedict Society Trilogy

The Mysterious Benedict Society is an action-adventure, puzzle solving, mystery series (not fantasy), but it is so good, I thought I'd suggest it anyway.

A brief version of the synopsis on Amazon: "After Reynie Muldoon responds to an advertisement recruiting "gifted children looking for special opportunities," he finds himself in a world of mystery and adventure. The 11-year-old orphan is one of four children to complete a series of challenging and creative tasks, (to) become the Mysterious Benedict Society. The four then travel to an isolated school where children are being trained by a criminal mastermind, and the young investigators need to use their special talents and abilities in order to discover his secrets."

Too many books, too little time. Artemis Fowl series is great and current. Pretty sure by 12 he should be able to pick out what he enjoys himself?

And I should probably be able to pick out books for myself too. But that really has nothing to do with asking for recommendations. Recommendations are a way to find out about new authors and expose yourself to things you might not happen upon by yourself.

An oldie but a goodie, Watership Down

Also he is likely old enough for Ender's Game and it's direct sequel Ender's Shadow. But I suspect Ender in Exile might be a bit much for a coule years though I would have enjoyed it at his age. I would suspect he would not like the other story arc just yet. Those are the "Speaker" arc as well as the "Shadow of" arc which were written for a more mature reader. But in a couple years I bet he would like the whole series quite a lot. The nice part is in the first two the protagonist and most key characters are kids.

Bugs me to recommend anything by Orson Scott Card because I don't care for his politics but hey, I enjoyed L. Ron Hubbard's SF a lot, he was very underrated as an SF author. Battlefield Earth was a fine novel.

Another set of stories that he might enjoy are an OLD group of anthologies about the Black Widower Club originally created by Isaac Asimov. Basically they are short stories all of which are very classic "locked room mysteries". I loved them as a kid because the puzzles are real and can be solved if you think about them. I don't know of any ebook editions though.

I would recommend the following:

Robert Muchamore - both the CHERUB and HENDERSON BOY'S series. I read the Cherub books myself and they are great little reads. Both are very action based and aimed at teen boys.

Jim Butcher - Dresden Series. A long series with quite short books about a wizard. Fantasy with some action. I would check one of these yourself to make sure they are appropriate. I wouldn't have any problems with a 12 year old reading but some more conservative people may do, there are some sex references but nothing graphic. Again, these are books I've read and loved.

Malorie Blackman - The Stuff of Nightmares - Adventure/Fantasy book about a teenage boy who encounters death. Not read it but on my to-do list.

Narinder Dhami - Bang Bang Your Dead - Adventure/Action based on a girl who's class is taken hostage by a gunman. Not read but on my to-do list.

Peter and the Starcatcher by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson (who are better known for their books for adults).

It's a prequel to Peter Pan and the first of a series.

That looks like fun! Does the series revisit the original Peter Pan in its telling, or does it just assume that the reader has already read the original?

You might try the Sword of Shannara series by Terry Brooks and The Dreamhouse Kings series from Robert Liparulo.
The Shannara trilogy is in the Sony bookstore as a bundle, just saw it today. Fun fantasy I read it when I was a kid.
