I checked off "mystery, general, and other." I read mostly mysteries. (I used to belong to the Mystery Guild.) When I'm looking for books, I search first mystery and then general. I picked "other" because I don't know whether time travel romances or books like "Sleeping with Schubert" fit into general or something else.

I can't think of a single sci-fi book that I have ever read -- as I'm thinking sci-fi is mostly space opera type stuff -- although I am intrigued by the praise that Baen gets and want to read something from there just because of that. I read one really dismal fantasy trilogy that has scared me off from the genre. Considering that I favor "magical girl" anime -- and I am not fan of giant robots in space -- I think that fantasy may be a good genre for me, if I knew how to filter what's out there. I have always considered "vampires" to be horror; haven't ever thought of them as ... fantasy? In my mind, I've branched off "paranormal" from "horror" because there are so many relatively benign characters lately. Maybe that is why I have such a hard time with genres -- my ideas don't line up with common sorting! |

Most of my reading is nonfiction, somewhat skewed towards travel narrative/essay/lit. I do get in some fiction (including YA), though mostly as audiobooks. Sci-fi and Fantasy just doesn't work for me, although

![]() I loved the first three books of Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. I tolerated book four. However, since book 5 she screwed up completely the series, with crazy Christianity ideas. Twilight had an interesting idea. I was ready to like it because I liked the film, however...the books are a lot worse. Bella's character was an abomination. I don't want to waste my time on anything else in the same vein

Fantasy is my main read although I have always enjoyed War books (either fact or Fiction) and lately as a short rest from Fantasy I have been enjoying Historical Fiction.

I realize that you said 'mostly', but wanted to chime in here that the one series with a vampire protagonist I've ever read was a gay, cozy murder mystery: Posted to Death.

I listed sci-fi, since that's what I started reading as a kid and I guess I still enjoy it the most. The last three books I've read though were Fantasy, Historical Fiction, and Non-Fiction.

I like SF - my first love was space opera.

I like Fantasy - particularly sword and sorcery, though both epic and urban can grab me - so long as the romance element in urban isn't too strong. I also like Historical Mysteries, particularly Roman ones. Beyond that, I'll read anything that catches my interest. |

I'm surprised that Romance has received so few votes. I gather from the Read 100 Books in 2011 threads that Romance is a major part of the diets of that community's members.

My "Other" was referring to Horror. I selected several others as well, including Vampire, but I'm not talking about the sparkly kind. I prefer my vampires to be grown-up, complicated, and edgy. Not. Sparkly.

I chose Romance as well, and I like my Romance mixed with other genres - Historical, Fantasy, Vampire, Mystery... I rarely read just Mystery, it has to be with Horror or Romance or something else. I read non-fiction, but not as often, and it's generally because I've developed an interest in a particular subject. |

I chose other, because I like suspense whydunits better than any other genre. The best practitioners in the field would be Ruth Rendell and Patricia Highsmith.
